I love to watch them happily digging. :love

So, speaking of digging...yesterday was the day I introduced our flock of 17 to the outdoor (enclosed) run with a new "compost play area" and I say it was better than a fish tank, watching chickens forage in the litter.

I like it so much I think I may try a deep litter method for the run—it gets so muddy in winter (CA, no snow) that I think leaves and wood chips would be useful. Anyone try that in a run before?

Yes, I started a deep litter method in our run. We are in Australia and are in the middle of another bad drought, so not getting a lot of rain and it's not breaking down as fast. However, it's great for burying poo in and keeping the flies off, and heaps better than just plain dirt. The girls dig themselves holes in different parts of the run, so they seem to like it.

I do. I'm subtropical though. Summer is our wet season & it can get pretty steamy. I usually have to ensure I'm topping up & my litter is pretty deep to keep all odours under control.

Yes ma'am @LCG Chicken Coop like they said i too am warm and wet most of the year in South Louisiana and i like it better than cold on any day of the week! I use pine shavings everywhere and they become soil in about 6 months. I dont throw any away i take it out of the brooders and fill in the driveway even. Leaves, sand and dirt also help and the birds mix it all down for me i just dump it in a pile. The mucky pens are like poop soup if nothings done :sick
