Predator Update

No predators came by last night. Sunday night I had 2.

Is this a cat? I feel like it is but what does the group think? Watch for it along the fence line in the back.

I know that this is a cat. It walked right up to where the newbies were cooped.

Yes both are kitties! The black one along the fence is quite slinky.

Now is a great time to gather the feathers! I have a bunch, I'm turning them into a feather garland. I also get clear christmas balls and fill them with feathers!

That is very clever. I wish I had done that with Maleficent's feathers. The ornament would make a nice keepsake. :(

Ravens are different, but I have seen a flock of crows chase off hawks, too. Just a heads up, crows and ravens will eat baby chicks, so there’s a danger window there until they get a little bigger.
Oh yes I know crows will actively hunt out baby birds in nests to eat but I won't have baby chicks outside to have to worry about. Thanks for reminding me about that.

My Name is Sansa

We have settled on a name for our third newbies. After much discussion with the young lady in question were settled on Sansa.

Bob,
I love her. Wyandottes are my favorite. I love their look however I don't have any yet. I will be getting my first chicks in a few weeks. I have been reading your post for several weeks now and have learned a lot about chickens and their crazy ways and the love that they bring. I may also get a polish as I think they are neat looking with the hair do. I have 9 on my list to consider. I plan on getting 8 chicks. It will depend on whats available. I would like a Lavender Orpington like your hen Hattie I believe.

G’morning. Ruby’s behavior is great this morning snd she feels less swollen. Taking her in, anyway.

Also, I noticed Buttercup’s ENORMOUS crop last night, and there’s still a doughy nugget this morning. Always found it odd that, as a winter layer, she never came back into lay after molting twice! She’s still a little pale in the face, so I don’t think her laying hormones are back, but her abdomen feels HUGE. She’s a big girl, so hard to know. I’ll be keeping an eye on her, too. Dang it, I’ve been trying to focus on flock wellness instead of illness. :he

Bob, how sre the girls? I’ll look for a morning update!

Whodatchick did you put anything (stone?) on top of the hardware cloth apron? or just leave it as its shown in the Pic? If it was left as shown, have you had any issues with critters trying to go under it ?
I have on it stepping stones a few inches apart.. but for a good long while I did just leave it as it was.. and there are still some places without stones... I’ve never had an issue with anything entering... I did see once where something tried to dig in but it was close up to the side and on top of the apron and that was before I added stones.... my hubby went above and beyond to build what I asked.. there was no way he would have dug two feet down around the entire run which is 12x24 to bury the wire... this seems to work just fine.. and over time it also get covered by grass and dirt so it sorta gets buried on it own..

Hattie is a lavender orpington. She is great. She is the perfect number 2 hen. Not to aggressive towards those below her and no inclination to take on number 1. She is a sweet girl with thr highest pitched voice in my flock despite being 2 lbs heavier than everyone else.

Hello

Aurora met Sansa and more particularly Sydney through the wire today. Something transpired between Sydney and Aurora but I could not devine what it was.

I did however get some video.

Maybe someone else, @Shadrach , could help decipher the body language, etc.

Here it is.
