Hi Bob! I am trying to catch up... I’ve only been gone a couple of days but you have three new birds!?!.... What the heck have I missed!! I didn’t think I’ve been gone THAT long!!

Things move fast at Fluffy Butt Acres. Your sage council was missed.

An opportunity came up (I think on Friday) to rehome some pullets. Among them was a Polish hen which my wife has wanted for years. I could not turn it down. I would up taking all 3 which was more than I wanted but I could not break them up as they had grown up together.

I picked them up Sunday night and they are now on Quarantine.

You are now caught up.

I am happy for you... so exciting!

Predator Update

No predators came by last night. Sunday night I had 2.

Is this a cat? I feel like it is but what does the group think? Watch for it along the fence line in the back.

I know that this is a cat. It walked right up to where the newbies were cooped.

Get some traps for those cats!

As others have said 100% two cats. Cat #1 is just being more sneaky about things. No offense, but do you by any chance have rodents hanging around the coop area? My girls spill feed and I have lots of the little buggers, they hoard feed in the Barn, I’ve caught them in the (feed free) roosting boxes at night, and they are moving into the trailer again thanks to my incompetent cats and their kibble being a greater attractant than the feline deterrent factor. Skunks will not only scavenge but are surprisingly adept at hunting mice and rats, and between them and the cats... that might just be what’s attracting the predators. That is where my Owl problem started, and an owl eating the rodents? Meh, no big deal... until it delevoped a taste for chicken. :hmm
Hello

Aurora met Sansa and more particularly Sydney through the wire today. Something transpired between Sydney and Aurora but I could not devine what it was.

I did however get some video.

Maybe someone else, @Shadrach , could help decipher the body language, etc.

Here it is.

I’m going to say interest and establishing pecking order/boundaries. Have you figured out the pecking order in the new girls group?

I discovered this discussion the other day. I've been off BYC for a while, but we recently lost one of our first ladies and wanted to find some solace :hitI started at the beginning and am only on page 175. I need a few days off to catch up! Thank you BYBob. Reading about your special girls you lost made me realize crying over my little Rosie wasn't crazy.
So sorry for your loss. I joined this group for solace too after a fox took out my Scary. You will read about it in a few hundred posts from where you are. It is a wonderful group. @BY Bob could be a professional story teller and I have got to know the flocks of everyone in the group. Almost like having more chickens myself!

Thank you for being kind, but I don't deserve it. Those three chickens lost their lives because I thought I knew best.

They were called Alice (a leghorn), Dora and Nigella (production reds).
Don’t blame yourself. I went through that on Scary. I knew there were foxes. But you can only do your best and we all make mistakes.
My emojis have stopped working again. So take this instead: HUGS!!

Well, I’m sorry for your loss, even though it was three yesrs ago. :hugs

Mine was 2 1/2 years ago. Warni g, this will get a bit sad and graphic, so read no further if that bothers you. We were having record breaking temps Labor Day weekend. I was dipping the girls one by one into a bucket to cool them off. Buttercup liked it so much, she asked for a second turn! Well, at the time, I was unaware you do not wet a sick bird and Rusty was unwell. She was just a few days inti her second hormone implant and was pretty ill, more-so than I realized (vet should have offered euthanasia instead of a second implant, but I didn’t know any better). Anyway, the dip killed her. When I set her down after the dip, she started screaming (like they do when clearing their throats.) She did it several times, and the flock started closing in on her; I had to shoo them away. Then she stumbled and fell slowly down, closing her eyes. I picked her up as she died. It was very traumatic, and I was a mess. I was responsible and I felt HORRIBLE. Her prognosis was guarded when she first got EYP and she never got her full strength back, despite a few more good months, so she was going to go eventually. I just did not intend for it to end like that.
So, so sorry.

Clearly important chicken-business was discussed. I wish ‘Google Translate’ could handle chicken speak!
