All days are good days when all who leave in the morning return at night.
However, some good days are more frustrating than others.
As I anticipated Mel decided to sit. I took the eggs away whereupon she promptly laid another and sat on that. This morning Moon, Hurry and Tackle all decided to come and help Mel out.
Can't fault them for solidarity. Unfortunately in the shuffling about to accommodate the egg contributors an egg got broken and I didn't notice until Mel had heated it up and spread it about; mostly over her underside.:he
This is a complete pita. The eggs get coated with bits of feathers and assorted debris and many Of Mel's feathers get pulled out as she moves around in the nest. It's a complete mess.
I want Mel to sit for three days so she doesn't just go and lay another egg elsewhere after an eviction. I did manage to the worst of the mess off and having dumped her in a dust bath she had a fairly decent go at cleaning up.
Last night.

Moon snacking on the broken egg in the box while I try to keep Mel out long enough for her to dry up a bit.

But we wouldn't have your wonderful stories if they didn't do what they do! :D

That's the same as my Lucy! She's four and the last of my original pair. She's my alpha chook so the new girls had better watch out!
Lucy is not exactly the alpha. Not that anyone would mess with her, but she doesn't go out of her way to rule anything. If anyone wants to challenge her, she is top hen, otherwise it's Surly and Lucy really doesn't give a hoot. :D

Fluffy Butt Friday

Sydney Update

@Ribh is right about these Barred Rocks. Sydney is certainly a go along get along girl.

Things have changed since she started laying. She has more interactions with the Big Girls. She submits to Lilly and Hattie rather than run from them. (I will try and get a photo of this) She just shared some left over spaghetti with Aurora of all hens with no pecking.

I need to watch her and Sansa more closely to see if their order has changed but Sydney's interactions with the Bigs certainly has.

Lilly, "What it's it?

Aurora, "I don't know. Hattie found it."

Hattie, "Taste it Aurora"

Aurora, "I'm not tasting it, you taste it"

Hattie, "You taste it Lilly, I just saw you picking through some old poo. It can't taste worse than poo."

Lilly, "Does it have legs? Bugs shaped like that taste awful"

Aurora, "If it had legs it would have run off by now."

Lilly, "Just peck it and see if it moves"

Hattie, "I don't see any legs, someone needs to taste it"

Lilly, " I swear I have seen this before. Let me think"

Aurora, " We don't have time for that. Taste it Hattie!"

Sydney walking by, "It's a corn chip you dweebs"

Lilly, "No, that's not right. I know what it is. What, What, What could it be? I know this."

Aurora, "Yeah, what does she know. You see those baby eggs shes laying"

Lilly, "They are tiny"

Hattie, "Don't pick on her, when's the last time you laid an egg Lilly?"

Aurora, "That's mean Hattie, she's old"

Lilly, "That hurts"

Hattie, "I think she's right"

Aurora & Lilly, "Who?!"

Hattie, CRUNCH!, "It was a corn chip! YUMMY!"
