Awww, so sweet.

Is that a critter ladder I spy in the pool?
It is a critter ladder! You all are very sharp. Here it is up close. I hope it works!

It's a far cry from Shad-style free ranging, but it sounds like a great option!
It is a far cry from what I would wish for. There are a number of factors that have influenced my decision.
I can't afford to feed the chickens that are here already, strange as this may seem to some.
I depend on my cash income from those working in the main house and three of them are now unemployed. The responsibility of feeding the chickens has fallen to me; the alternative was get rid of at least half of the chickens.
I don't really want to dwell on the crap that goes on here but with the current population about one sixth of my total monthly income goes on feeding the chickens.
The chances of re-homing with anyone who is not likely to eat them in the not too distant future is low.
This is the best I can do for them in the current circumstances.

Hi, Folks. I’m sorry I haven’t been on. I’m so fried. I just work, work, work lately, but thankful to still have a job and paycheck!

Wednesday 9 of 10 birds laid. (all except Bridge, who is 4 and rarely lays). Yesterday both Dorothy (mostly white Leghorn pullet with calcium issues) and Ruby (3-yr-old Buckeye with oviduct and swelling issues) were in nest boxes, but didn’t lay, though I think Bridge did.

During our meeting last night, I could hear a pair of hawks nearby. They were so loud and chattery, my eyes started wandering from my screen. I could SEE the hawks right out my window in the yard! They seem to be a mating pair.

Sadly, the flock won’t be getting as much free range time until I can rig a temporary containment system (roll up fence?) since my neighbor has had a sudden, significant shift in personality and is threatening to shoot neighborhood dogs. I no longer trust him and don’t want my dog or flock anywhere near him. Suggestions on an easy, removable fence? Poultry netting? I have a couple good flyers. (On occasion when I was eating something Dorothy has jumped right up onto my shoulder while I was standing!) Currently there is no fencing whatsoever, and the flock thinks both yards are theirs.

If anyone would be so kind as to provide a brief summary on what I’ve missed this week, I’d be grateful. Last things I remember were that one of the chicks at Shad’s place went missing and another one of Bob’s birds (was it Sansa?) went in the freshly uncovered pool. Thanks! Oh and the palace has mice. LOL!
