So maybe that’s a good thing? Is it definitely not a threat to the birds?
I plan to add a second layer of wire with the pattern offset to the first layer to create a tighter pattern. No reason to assume it is not a threat and if it could get it so could other things.. I try not to kill snakes since they "should" keep down rodents. The predator load around here is why I went with the "fortress" solution rather than free range.

I’d like to note for the record what I think is a sign of chicken intelligence. To me, it seems as though my salmon girls have worked out that if they want something, they holler and I come running. To be let out of the coop in the morning and have access to the food? Just start yelling! (They haven’t worked out the treadle feeder yet though :barnie). Want to go bed and have someone open the roof for them? Alarm call! Although they showed their problem-solving skills the other night; it had got quite dark before I noticed, so I went outside and looked in the new house. Only Tegan was in there. So I checked the old house; they had decided they were bunking down with Lucy and Charlie. They hadn’t settled yet so I grabbed Nyssa and put her on the roost. River was a bit difficult to grab as she had bunked down behind Lucy, so I decided to let her have a sleepover.

Poor Cashew. Broodiness is a pain when you can’t stick fertilised eggs under them. :hugs
Looks like a great coop! Poor Cashew. :love
Thanks! I don’t even have a wire crate. I use a pet carrier when I have s sick bird. Might see if a cooling rack will fit in there.

Chickens are indeed intelligent in my opinion!

Poor cashew. I put a block of ice in the box she was sitting in. When she came back to the coop, she paced back-and-forth not sure what to do. She eventually sat in the nest beside it. Mind you, there are no eggs in any of the boxes. I remove them hours ago. I have dipped her in a cool bucket of water twice and removed her from the nest box several times. I’ve closed the door to the coop. She got super stressed about that, so I reopened it. Poor thing. I think I’m gonna have to figure out how to put her on some wire with air underneath her.
But I would really like is just to get her a couple chicks and be done with it.

He's getting there is Treacle. Both Tap and Moon spent most of the day with him.
That's Hurry heading into the house. Treacle tried it on with her and she's definitely Cillins hen. Interestingly Tap went for her even though she was trying to and did, get away from Treacle. Tap definitely thinks Treacle is her man.:love Treacle looked very surprised whe Tap launched herself at Hurry.

This has to be the best love story on Back Yard Chickens! We are all so lucky that you are sharing it with us @Shadrach ! :love

Cashew is in full broody mode. I had to pull her out of the nest box panting. Three times. I dipped her legs in a cool bucket, and held her butt up to the fan mister. She’s not impressed. Now the coop door is closed and she sitting on an outside perch grooming her feathers.

When I approached, she became a screeching beach ball. Not the best day for this, considering the heat.
Poor baby. It's not her fault her biological alarm is running!
