OK, OK, I'm awake! The problem with having a house rooster, "Jaffar" is that he starts crowing every morning, exactly at 05:15. I can't find a snooze button, and there is no way to reset the time on him. I'm glad his crow is short and sweet. (It could be worse, I guess).:thGood morning all you Fluffy Butts.:frow

Always good to observe that!

Where did you get those clips that hold the bottles for chick feed and water?
The clips come from water bottles for rabbit cages. I was in TSC trying to figure out how to set up water for my new prefab coop back in 2013 and I went to the rabbit aisle. I noticed that the rabbit watering bottles had this snap-in system and were about the same size as the chick water bottles. The problem was the chick water bottles had no grooves so they would slide right down to the ground. I wanted to elevate the water to keep the dirt out.

So I roughed up the surface of each and used some JB Weld. They have worked great ever since for chicks or small pullets.

The one with the food in I dropped in the winter and cracked the top. So I had to make another waterer and it became the food dispenser.

Here it is in what is basically was the original arrangement on the original prefab which I now use for new flock members. (until Sydney hatched her own).

Sleepwalking?

This startled me last night when I caught it. At first i thought Phyllis was going to sleep with Sydney and the babies. Instead she went for a walkabout before she settled in a corner for the night. Odd.

It's actually really interesting that you caught that, because last night I was slipping some chicks under a broody hen, and I heard one of my other chickens walking around. It was pitch black out, so I know she couldn't have seen anything. I don't know why she was walking around the coop. I guess it's just something chickens do.

I actually caught my lavender orpington, Hattie, getting up in the middle of the night to eat this part winter. The nights were so long that she was getting hungry. I always understood that they did nothing at night. It's just not so.
