That is quite the lump he has on his footpad. I’m pretty sure Roostie picked his bumbles up from thistle spines when I put him in the barns last year during a snowstorm. Our Hay is full of them.

I think I've got the right sort of pad sorted now. I'm still waitng for the drawing ointment.

I must bake a cake one day. I did sometimes when the kids were little but I just don't bother these days.

Edwina is lovely. Pepper has got something that reminds me of some of the hens here.

Moral Conundrum

It is cold and windy here today. The wind chill is 14 degrees F (-10 C). However the sun is shining. ☀

If the ladies stay in their complex today it will be much warmer for them as the wind is blocked and the shower curtains will create a greenhouse for them. They will be active. If I let them out to free range, they will surely run out and hunker down with the apple trees. They will not be active but rather will lay around huddled all day.

I honestly believe that the best thing for them is to not let them out, despite their protestations to the contrary.

My question for all of you is, Is it wrong for me to deny them their own freedom of choice or should I leave them locked in?

I'm with the let them choose. -10 is pretty cold but the chickens here have been out in -8 on a number of occasions and seemed to suffer no ill effects. I would leave access to coop and run open for them and generally keep an eye on them, particulalry the lightered feathered of them.
