And another quick question, it seems here that the only grit sold is shell grit.
When I called the farm supply place I get their food from (they sell granite dust which has little bits in it) they had no idea about whether it would be suitable for the chooks or not, the question stumped them.
Why don’t we have more insoluble grit options here I wonder, why is shell grit all you can get?!

Thank You all so much! I lost a chicken Monday to bad vent prolapse, and really didn't want to lose my new ones too.

Queenie is tooting - wheezing a note - when she breathes (the out-breath I think) and when her head is upright. It's quiet when her head is down, pecking or eating. I've heard a couple of quick squeaks like a cough too. If she runs she's tooting and sort of growly breathing the other way until she catches her breath. She was quiet this morning, we came back from a walk and I heard it. She doesn't feel hot or look off color, shall I bring her inside and look down her throat? Of course I'm thinking some parasite in her airway, or a lung infection. I haven't yet got a poo sample. Need to stalk her for that....

You should separate her from the others. 😔

Finally! Grass has started growing and I rigged up a little area the Princesses could hang out in and destroy the new grass.
It isn’t yet very big and it doesn’t have shrubs to hide under, but they had fun and it allowed me to test out the temporary fencing I am planning on using when I plant the chicken garden. It seemed to work fine and I will do an outer electric one to keep the foxes away.

What fencing system are you using? I've ordered a starter electric fence and am considering a similar "inside fence" for them. I've also got some 2" knotted netting coming to experiment with rigging up aerial protection.
