I think allele is a cool and unusual name for a chicken.The long story is that my husband chooses weird names out for naming children. While pregnant with my youngest, he had a lot of suggestions.
Like Socrates, Archimedes, Platyhelminthes... I cannot even remember the other things he offered up, it was all so bad.
The least awful was Allele, and to nip any other awful suggestions said if a girl, he could name. If a boy, I would name.
We never did have a daughter, so he was excited to name a chicken Allele.
The short story is that an allele is part of a gene.
