The hormones really do work. Since Naenae is a new layer, she still may sort things out. Buttercup did lots of back-to-back pairs of soft eggs when she started laying.I would rather find a vet to implement the hormones like @micstrachan has. Even if I had to drive a couple 100 miles.
I think an artificial light solution is too forced to be permanent, even with a buddy.
I’ve lost three adults and a chick. All three adults were really hard.I'm so happy to hear this! They do live much shorter lives than we do. It's important to adjust to loss if at all possible. I know it's hard, but if we don't we'll be a mess year in, year out. I've already lost 4 (3 in a fox raid, 1 to reproductive infection) and I've only been keeping chooks for a few years.
Tsuki laid an egg almost every day in her first year or so. That tapered off, I think, to about every second day by the time she was about 2 and a half. By the time she passed away at 5 and a half years she hadn't laid an egg in months.

Unbelievable! Everyone is back in the barn/coop now. I only had to herd Coco and Shenandoah back from the other side of the property. Wasn’t too hard, they knew what I wanted, and they reciprocated!![]()
Back at ya!
I'm sorry.I’ve lost three adults and a chick. All three adults were really hard.
And it’s REALLY not looking good for Ruby today. I had to crawl under hubby's truck to retrieve her and bring her home. It’s about 1/3 of the way from my neighbor’s tree (where they hung out most of the day) and the coop. I put her on her shelf with fresh bedding and rigged up a towel sling over her, since she’s parked under Dorothy’s roosting spot and I don’t want her getting pooped on.
WOOHOOOO!!! Goooo, us! Thanks, Bob, for starting this awesome thread!Check it out!
