Oh and if you were wondering what happened to their house, here is the semblance of a roof. There's welding to do before we finish.
Hens have gone from say 30 eggs a year to 250 to 300 per year.I get that (I think) but if a laying machine hen takes a few days off in the winter doesn't that rest the system a bit? And by extension if you could get them to take a few days off in summer wouldn't that also help?
That is the reason I was thinking about black out shades for all of them - to persuade them to take a break in the summer.

Makes me glad I let Ivy sit for so long.Hens have gone from say 30 eggs a year to 250 to 300 per year.
Going broody is one way to rest the system; 21 days of sitting and another 21 days of chick care during the laying season for example, provides a reasonable rest. Even if their eggs are not fertile, with care, the keeper can make sure the hen eats well, so just letting the hens sit can help. I used to do this and for the hens that were regularly broody it helped to reduce their egg laying to close to 100 a year after their first year.
Me too, with Charlie.Makes me glad I let Ivy sit for so long.
Staying with friends seems more funNo! Which city is it in?
I looked it up and found it's in London, I usually stay with friends or in one of the colleges when I'm in London. The hotel with the desk fan is in Leicester.
