And some of the cochin girls. They look slightly offended because I had just threatened them that if 1 more egg was laid in Louis stall free ranging time would be cut in half. 1 of them, and I don't know which one has decided that instead of going back in the coop to lay like the rest of the girls, she needs to lay Louis a toy.

Creamy, Blueberry and Raven were not in the mood to pose for mugshot monday.

So sorry about Henrietta. Predation happens in free range contexts but it's a heartbreak every time.

At the same time, your new hens really are stunning! And so are the silkies.

We'll bring back the "killer" corn from memory lane, too. :gig:lau

Well, I guess it's time to make a update I was praying I wouldn't have to make. Henrietta is gone. She had started hiding her eggs again about a week before I got sick with covid so I suspected she was trying to go broody again. A few days after I was when I was miserable and unable to make it outside my dad had mentioned to me he had not seen her and suspected she was setting again. Roughly a week after that was when Drummie was killed and I knew I had a problem. I was still holding out hope that she was alive just hidden somewhere and I was missing her coming off the nest as I did with momma hen this last time and she would show back up with chicks in tow. Drummie will be gone 3 weeks this Wednesday, which means if she was setting this past week she should have showed back up. She didn't, which can only mean she was the evil coyote's first victim and not Drumstick. So in total before I knew what the culprit was and still blaming hawks I lost 4 chickens to it. Henrietta, Drumstick, Clover and Pumpkin. After we killed that big male last Sunday have not saw any signs of anymore, but we are still watching and hunting. I have noticed a change in my flock again as they are once again relaxed and comfortable in the yard where the attacks were happening and back to spending most of their time there. It also makes Raven and Blueberry even more special to me. Raven is the only Henrietta daughter I have now and Blueberry is the granddaughter of both Henrietta and Toothless.
Aww… I’m so sorry.

Hi everyone! Great news, the house is scheduled to be closed in at the end of September. We’ve had some ups and downs here, but I’ve gotten a cell signal booster and can get back online a bit again. I just have to rewire things a bit for 12V. Still on our big to do list, the trailer: installing the diesel heater for winter, refurbishing the toilet and bathroom for winter, and requiring our solar system and replacing our batteries.

Arduinna gave me a huge scare, a week ago she broke out of her crate while I was out putting up the chickens, and ate a Remembrance Day poppy! I just finally found the pin today, with my foot, and have never been so thankful to step on a sharp object. She should be getting a domestic Sangeen (milk breed) boyfriend in December, and hopefully another doe friend. So a temporary under the tow pin of the 5th goat barn is also in the works (I’m still stockpiling my pallets, but have a rough design now).

Also, I’ve had quite a few broodies hatching out chicks, including a second round by all my first broodies to hatch out babies. One of which manages to set under my trusses, safe from the humans, but not from the mink or raccoons. Three weeks of worry over predators and she finally hatched out 11!!! Chicks. Getting them all out from the trusses was an adventure in gymnastics and through stinging nettle, but she’s safely set up now with all here babes in a meat tractor.

Apparently I still need to get a WiFi connection to upload pics though… sorry
Lovely to hear from you Kris! Glad to hear Arduinna is ok!
