Bob, see how they got caught in the corner? Can they have a little doorway to the nest box in that corner? So they needn't recollect how to get to safety in the heat of the moment.

Fully expecting to pay some shra as I read on...

This was my impression too, they couldn't find their doorway, and that they tried to hide under the window shelf. But she didn't pursue them further, which is reassuring.

While I was gone last weekend, there was a garbage picking episode that netted this piece of shi....art.

I was thinking the same thing. Or perhaps a little box or piece of ply on bricks for them to dive under for shelter. It would also make a handy step to reach the roost with.

Maybe extend the shelf in that corner?

I think one time she was wiping her beak and another time she was grooming - it was definitely grooming of your ear!

There was a lot of loud peeping in my ear as well!

They have. As chickens that don't see "up" well, I thought they might need more help finding it. They are doing well.

They see up just fine. It is just what they see doesn't provide very useful information beyond "oh boy am I beautiful or what?!"

I don't know why everyone is laughing - I really didn't look it up.
I think it must have been something I read years ago and it hung around in the dusty corners of my brain. I wish I could recall things like where I put the car keys as easily!
