Just found this gem of a post. This page slipped by me, so I’m glad I went back. Kinda nice to (sort of) know the age of Volt and Amp. And YAY to Lima!!!! What are the chances of you posting a video?

I'm having enough trouble getting decent pictures!

I’m out of meally worms again I cooked and chopped up a thin steak for the chooks instead. They didn’t seem to mind too much.

That is very similar to what I've observed. The point where mum stops mothering them I've always found heart rending. There hasn't seemed to be any particular chick age, it's just when mum decides.
Ruffles cared for and protected her chicks for over two months, Blue Spot averaged around five weeks.
What has been ntereesting is all the mums have at some point taken their chicks back to their tribe coop with them shortly before they stop being mum.
So, the chicks get introduced to the tribe by mum, unless they were hatched in the tribe coop then the chicks already know who not to piss off.
Also, all the mums, usually very early on introduce their chicks to their father/tribe rooster.

It was only 4 weeks with Sydney but they all lived together from the start. I wonder if that led to it being faster.

That was the hardest thing to watch. The babies were so confused. Fortunately, I was there for them.

Start engineering: the solar panel powered thingy, rigged to nerf gun, with a motion sensor light thing set to pull the trigger..., set up several at assorted angles for individual FIRE if something large enough to set it off swoops in...

Yep. I usually do French. YD did German. So funny. They think if they yell louder we'll suddenly understand!

But she is most senior, age wise, yes (or at least is in the oldest group if you have more than one the same age?)

I think if they age out of laying, it doesn't decrease their status...I just think STARING to lay (like having a sweet-sixteen /quincenera/etc...coming of age stage) improves their status as they move into official 'adulthood' instead of being adolescents....imho.
Again, only based on my few years with chickens and observational/anecdotal info...so @Shadrach, feel free to correct me

I love socks! I wear them most days in the cooler months.

DH and I have a running joke about socks, which has been going for nearly 20 years. Just before we left the UK to come back to Oz, we had a three-week holiday in Europe. Hubs was working the last day in the UK and I was supervising the shippers and packing our back-packs. I managed to pack him two pairs of socks for a three-week trip. He still occasionally teases me about socks or lack thereof.
