They like it because of the higher protein. Doesn't matter what form or what-not, my adults always chow down on the higher protein feed that is out if they can get to it! (starter, grower, feather fixer, etc.) Don't ask me how they know. But even when I switch which feed is in which feeder...still the same..highest protein feed gone in a heartbeat!

I am feeding grower to everyone (because I have all ages and the rooster here), and oyster shell for calcium. But my crew would eat starter in a flash, do you feed that to your laying hens?

Not intentionally....but the adults all go gaga for it when I have littles & starter is out! I do feed mostly grower (I actually mix a couple different things...but that is another story) because I have a mixed flock: hens, roos, hen ducks, drakes. I, too, have oyster shell and grit out in containers. I only worry about the grit containers being full, though, this time of year when the ground is frozen.

Bay Watch. She has a lot of energy tonight! Yay. And didn’t want to come into the house. So she’s staying home with all the others in the coop tonight. (I’m staying inside the house tonight! It gets too cold out there.)

No No and No to that method. I was bringing in a coffee cupfull into the house though and putting it in the blender for about 5 seconds. My pretty little Liar needs that calcium if she is ever going to lay that egg. No egg again for her today, tomorrow I'm playing fleetwood mac.

You’d think, just the threat of playing Fleetwood Mac, would be enough to get her to shoot an egg!

Ok so I said Poppy lied again today. Had to go do my grandmother's grocery shopping today and when I left she was in her spot. I came home after dark and made sure everyone was up and did my final egg check of the day. There was 1 egg, in Poppy's nest. Looking at it outside my mind said cochin egg, it was too big to be a pullet silkie egg. When I went to put it in the carton I take a closer look, all 4 of my laying cochins had laid their eggs and already been put in the carton. Look at this egg closely it is a little smaller then the smallest cochin egg that is currently laid. It's also a little slimmer. So, I either have 5 cochin girls laying at the moment, or today while I was gone Poppy laid her first egg. Either way I'm going to be watching her like a hawk tomorrow to hopefully confirm my suspicions.
