Chickens are like horses in trying to find ways to kill themselves. My silkies were terrible until between 6 to 7 weeks old. Branch almost did kill himself, He managed to get into a bucket that had about 3 inches of rainwater. I do not know how long he had been in it, but my dad found him and brought the drowned rat to me. I had to use the hair dryer to dry him off and warm him up.

Blanche got two rides on the wheelbarrow today when I was throwing down hay for the week

She does this every weekend hahaha

I gotta try singing them down. Thing goes off so loudly (and Nellie has started following suit) that I can here her clearly from inside the house, over the noise from video games the boys play. As loud as she is, I will NEVER set up nest boxes by the door like @RebeccaBoyd has or my husband will never sleep (he's working nights). Cheetah goes off like that when he's trying to call me out to deal with something....like a strange cat in the yard....or the Sun is green and purple.....or the wind torked his feathers and I need to turn it off....hoping he'll settle that down some over the next year.

To be fair, the porch boxes came about last spring when I had several new layers fighting over nest spots and if one was used they would drop a egg anywhere or hide them. Bunny showed a liking to that corner by just laying on the porch before the boxes were there. I had no idea they would become this popular or I may have rethought the entire situation. But this way even with the bickering I no longer have to play "find the easter egg" even with new layers.

Yep I have nightmares of that

I don't leave buckets with water in them for them to fly into, I know I am paranoid, but I have learnt the hard way with the horses that animals can get into all sorts of trouble!!

My Veterinarian once wrote a description on my invoice 'During the daily stampede, two yearlings collided with each other'.... One of them spent 6 weeks on stall rest for a bone chip!!!

Can you imagine what sort of trouble chickens can get up to? Like getting wedged between two hay bales? Never to be found until evening feeding...

When the wild birds nested in the garage last year (I think they were Carolina wrens) one of their little babies had an unerring aim for anything dangerous. He landed in a bucket of water, a flower vase with water, and a flower vase with a long neck without water but a real challenge to get him out. Honestly I rescued that little guy a dozen times!
Here he is stuck on the chimney, during one of my many rescues and finally fledged and off in the big wide world.

Arizona is giving Jaffar a hard time today. She’s looking everywhere for a place to lay her egg. Jaffar has pointed out four great places, but she loudly refused each one. I told Jaffar “Women! What can you do?” He smiled and went on with his business!

Thing has never joined the treat throng until now. The feather trim during the extra cold seems to have been of great help. She doused and froze her crest....again....and while drying it, we trimmed it again. She now has more of a mullet and is more adventurous. Storm has gotten quite large, and still has some filling out to do. Pear has gotten very tatty with the feathers....almost like she switched from slooooowwww moult to fast moult overnight. Keeping an eye on her. Poor Cheetah was feeling frisky, and NO ONE was willing to oblige him. The girls are making him work for it.
