This afternoon, I bought a treadle feeder in a different design which I'm really looking forward to. It has a pin to lock it shut at night to keep pests out, and a pin to gradually adjust the opening until the hens are no longer concerned about stepping up and the pin can be removed (or something like that). I also like the deep tray and grill to stop pellets getting flicked out (I'm looking at you Ivy).

Seems your hens learned very quickly! Did you put treats in there at first? I'm planning to put tomato, cheese and lettuce in there on the first day.
That looks very swish MJ. The soft close lid is a plus. Mine goes CLANG!!!! and I can hear it anywhere in the house and yard. At least I know the girls are using it, but so do the neighbours...🙄

Alice's moult is much slower this year. She just looks disheveled.

@BY Bob, Lancaster Chicken Coops won’t answer me over email, phone or online form. Their customer service person is on maternity leave, so business comes to a halt, I guess?
Well that's crazy. Do they have a store?

This is going so well Bob!!
So far i think you are very right.

I'm planning to open the drop door on Sunday and combine them while they are all in the complex, all the time. This will be after several hours of free range on Saturday.

I think this will really start to tell the tale. I may run out some batteries keeping track of everyone.

What about some netting around the base of the magnnolia then at least it couldn't drop down on them without getting tangled.
I am considering that and I think I will be doing it. I think it is a good idea. The problem is the coopers hawk can walk over on the ground after them but I think they would have a better chance running from it if they saw it coming.

Oh geez. I can’t tell you how many times I stopped and started War And Peace! I can’t seem to get through it.
It’s a great story but oh man!
It's not for everyone for sure.
