I feel confident about this, too.Phyllis has taken on squirrels single handed before and she is my smallest hen. I think they are safe from squirrels.
Aww… this is so sweet, and it sounds like an amazing set-up. If you’ve posted pics, will you post again anyway?Thank you, and you are correct, I am so blessed with all of them - husband included!!
Actually, the most amazing part of this is...I truly thought I would hate the chickens (based on a 3+ week childhood experience)....and they absolutely just stole my heart! My Rosie (1 of the first 8) was just so endearing. Independent, good top girl...but demanding & sweet, too. As soon as she heard my car door shut when I came home from work she would - at the top of her voice - yell " BAAAWWWK, bawk, bawk, bawk." Translation: Let me OUT, out, out, out". She had a HUGE pen (raised Coop, 4X4 on a 4X8 frame/covered run...attached to a 12X24 'safe' run, attached to a 32' diameter semi-circle 'woods' run (6' high fencing, but lots of trees, so no wire top. But yet, there she would be at the pen gate...demanding I let her out to free range! She would immediately run to the garden& compost areas & scratch her heart out..then she would run over to me and give quiet little buk, buks, meaning ' love ya, will you pick me up and cuddle? She had my heart in a little puddle in no time. She was my greatest hen ever. I think she even had a name for me...there was this sound she would make only to me when she wanted my attention....like she was calling my name. And she definitely knew her name!!

We moved from there...so set-up is now different. Secure pen that is 18'X24' inside of a 25' X50' pen that has 2 huge pines. The NW 'wall' of the pen is a barn that needs work. I'm hoping to expand the pen another 5 or 6 feet & have the compost inside the pen (so it will be 30'X50'). When I do that, will replace the 5' chainlink fence that was here with the 6 ' chain link fence from our other place (surrounds the 'extended pen')...and, also, add a 7'X12' duck hut/pen' ( secure)with an elevated water tub that is easy to drain, and has crushed stone under weatherproof slats inside the extended run.Aww… this is so sweet, and it sounds like an amazing set-up. If you’ve posted pics, will you post again anyway?![]()
This is wonderful news and just amazing! So, my hawk attack girl is just fine and dandy. No sign of wound in mouth (again, checking with sever protests on her part), no sign of wound on outside of cheek either. Carefully 'combed' through muff...and felt gently with fingers - no scab/wound!!!! The abrasions abound her beak and eye were healed earlier in the week...and she is her perky, independent self!

We are all on pins and needles with you. I know you will keep us posted.Tonight is the big night. I've set a reminder that at 10pm I need to do the final candle to check the questionable egg and then remove the turner to officially go into lockdown. I do not think I will have a early hatch but even with full size eggs it has happened before. For the next 3 days I will be stalking the incubator. I thought ahead this time, in the past I've drove myself crazy imagining that the eggs were wiggling and rolling around before they actually were. This time when I set the eggs I put a big x on one side of each egg. When the turner is removed the eggs with be placed with the x side up. Once I see movement I can have the brooder set up and ready to go in 10 minutes.
So good to hear. I bet she is also sporting a badge of valor for seeing off the hawk! So, my hawk attack girl is just fine and dandy.
