The cochin girls are trying to drive me crazy. Between Holly going broody and choosing the nest in the coop as her spot and me moving the chicks outside the cochins have had to resort to using a different nest. 3 of them have taken to it with no problems. The other 3 are evil. If they can not lay where they want to then if I want to get their eggs I have to retrieve them from the middle of the horse stalls. It is fine if they choose Dirt's stall, he leaves them alone. Louis and Russ, eat them every chance they get. Their new favorite spot, in between Russ and Louis stall and the boys fight over who gets the egg. This morning, I rescued 2, yesterday they beat me to all 3.

Quick update: my little wet peep didn't make it. I suppose the other chicks were bullying him/her and was at the bottom of the chick pecking order.

I guess they don't like soy and prefer their protein from animals. Picky little omnivores.

I don't trust soy, they are a good judge of feed imo

I have switched to Grublies feed, it is black solider fly larve based. It is expensive but I only have 3 hens and they free range all day. I go through about 1 cup of food a day.

Interesting. I had only heard of them as treats. I just checked out the website. I might give it a go - though as you say, it is expensive!

Thanks for asking. The birds seem fine. I’m still sad, but grateful to have been there and focused on the fact that, aside from Ruby, who had an incredible will to live and LOTS if intervention, the chickens dying seem to be the young ones. I think that’s a clue.

The chickens are hatchery stock? What are you suggesting? I doubt any of this is due to a failure on your part. More like luck and the stock of the chickens being bred these days. The sample size here is small. Even a coin toss can come up consistently not in your favor with a small sample size, right? Do you suspect Marek’s? I thought it was likely egg-binding and all that happens with that.

Sorry to laugh but you racing the horses for eggs is quite a comical image - and i didn't even know horses ate eggs!

Wow egg eating horses - that's actually pretty awesome hahaha.

I would be more worries about the hens getting stepped on!

We need photos of this make shift nesting spot !
