Thanks for this! Scratch and Peck is sold locally, but not at my feed store. I thought they only had non-pellet feed, which might only add to the fat problem if they hand select what they eat. GREAT to know they have pellet (or is it only crumble?) feed. 16% protein seems low, but I can supplement with sardines, beef liver, etc.
Hey Michelle do you have a local feed mill that makes their own feed? If so maybe you can get them to make up a feed for you?

Many horse people so this all the time. And so do lots of dairy farmers here.

It seems a little harsh to call a hen evil for trying to protect her babies but I understand. That looks like it hurts for certain.

She seems very clever with her nest location selection. All of yours do.
I know it is a little harsh to call her evil, and she is not. But that reaction is mild compared to if she had chicks or was farther along in the incubation period. There was 1 instance in that video of her classic "grab and twist" method, many times she has brought blood. If chicks were involved, she would have came flying at my head. I know many people who would not tolerate it. I've came to look at it this way, she is doing her job and if someone were to threaten Rosie I would be the same way. It just hurts when you are on the receiving end of her punishment. The name calling is just a way to get rid of the urge to wring her neck at times.

50lb bag of Dumor chicken layer pellets, wasting away in my barn. The chickens just won’t eat them. Or the high protein it supplied (18% protein) :(
Mine refused to eat Dumor layer pellets, and any of the Purina brand pellets. I ended up giving the 50lb sacks away. They love the producer's pride mini pellets. It only has 16% protein, but they more then make up for it finding things free ranging. They also have oyster shell available at all times. I just had to get a 2nd bag of it. The first 50lb bag lasted almost a year.

Producer’s Pride 16%. I will try to get some

Here is one of the hatch day girls Creamy. She is too busy at the moment contributing to my surplus of eggs for a proper picture.

Somewhere in the midst of all the little black fuzzballs is baby Raven. 1 of the 2 white ones is Creamy. Sadly I lost the other white one 2 days later. Raven could be the one in the main back with the mostly black comb. Until she started laying she had a completely black face including her comb which earned her the name of Raven.
