Anyone know what kind of snake this is? It was quite long. Maybe 30”.
There is the additional question of what it was doing inside the house.
This evening has just been too eventful for me!

That is the Eastern Milk snake. It is nonvenemous. I hope you did not harm it. Here is some info from the state of New Hampshire wildlife describing it.

Looking on line the closest I get to is a milk snake. So please ask the gal you work with. I am in New Jersey.
That is correct. Eastern Milk snake. Not dangerous. I love snakes!
 
Not knowing anything about snakes I decided not to grab it bare handed and picked it up with fireplace tongs and tossed it out into the yard.
Well done. All is safe. You were never in danger.

I am a bit surprised as I have found identical ones in the barn in the past which suggests they are native. I wonder if I should tell animal control in case she is correct.
It does not look like a rat snake to me. It is a milk snake. They are native to the area.
