New coop for Guineas and the blind chick.going to buy a roll of shade cloth to cover the areas on all my coops that get direct sun. Gorda is much better now but am planning more ventilation to the coops that need it. View attachment 3173775

Can you angle the shade cloth out, like an awning (maybe by attaching at top, but having a wooden frame angled out at 45 degrees from bottom to support it , instead of putting it directly on the side (instead of against the side top to bottom)? I think that would be more effective, if you are able to do that.

The new coop looks great, btw!!

Got home VERY late last night. One of the larger towns here does their fireworks display on 3 July. The smaller towns around on 4 July (no idea why, now on my "to be investigated list", discussed with MIL who grew up in area and has always been that way). Display starts around 1030pm (sky finally dark enough), so pushing midnight when got home. Went to close coop (BBQ with friends had us leaving around 3pm). Big door wide open.....flashlight on phone, head count....all there, disgruntled at having sleep disturbed. 3 eggs (Magpies, juveniles, have figured out how to get in to steal them: working on that)

After some investigating, found a news article from 2020 stating the 3 July fireworks has been a tradition for over 100 years and is the biggest display in Montana (and plans to keep that title). Nothing as to why it started that way, but if it's been going on for over a century, the origins may not be known anymore. Still, they do a fantastic job every year.

Yay, RC got her lap chicken!!!

And it is the glorious black girl you have always wanted, to boot!

I am not yet convinced she is a lap chicken but she has potential.
I just hope she is OK health wise. I can’t figure out what is up with her.

Oh, little Bella Dracula ! How is she today, and was yesterday the first day you noticed this ?
Does she do it at random times or only after eating ?

If she doesn't have any other symptoms I also think tapeworms seem unlikely but the only downside with deworming her for eventually nothing, is the risk of creating resistance in the long term.

This morning is cool. She is OK but something is off.
She still does the weird mouth breathing thing and she still honks out a cough every now and then.
I don’t see any dirt in her nostrils and I don’t hear obstructed breathing.
She does the mouth breathing thing randomly, or at least with no pattern I can figure.
She fell off the roost and slept on the platform underneath and this morning she didn’t get up and about when the others did - had a bit of a late start to the morning. But she is up and about now.
She eats like a pig but she hasn’t put on much weight (admittedly it has only been a week since I last weighed her).
She also seems a bit clumsy - hard to describe exactly but she jumped off my knee and forgot to engage both feet on landing.
Odd.
I will continue to observe because who wouldn’t want to watch such a pretty little thing?!

I Can Fly!

Glynda discovered the high roost yesterday afternoon at nap time. This led to Lady Featherington feeling the need to join her. Proving that despite being a future dual purpose lady her wings work!

Gucci would not join in. She would rest underneath them. I assume this is because of her leg bothering her. This led to a near miss as Lady Featherington nearly pooed on her head!

Since Gucci would not fly up, the others got down eventually and they cuddled in a corner for their nap.

Adorable. Lady Featherington had to give it some serious thought before trying!
What you describe is exactly what happened with the Hooligans and Bernadette.
If it were me I would keep going with the B2 - remember the body cannot store it. Add it to water, food etc. Little Gucci still has a lot of nerve growing to do!

Great set up. I have never used shade cloth - does air flow through it OK?
