Her comb and wattles are reddening up nicely, so I am guessing it won't be too long now - maybe a couple of weeks 'til laying starts?I am watching them carefully. Obviously I am worried about signs of illness, but also I was worried Bernie would be left as a lone chicken - but the three of them get on just fine and so far today are mostly hanging together.
I don’t know if/when Bernadette will start to lay but I can imagine that might create some different dynamics.
Maybe. Hopefully. Her comb and wattles are reddening up nicely, so I am guessing it won't be too long now - maybe a couple of weeks 'til laying starts?
Hopefully they are still cohesive once she starts to lay (I hope Bernie doesn't upset the applecart by stepping on toes!) That said, with all of the losses lately, I suspect that there won't be too much bickering in the near future. A month or so, maybe, but I just don't see it happening right away, given the circumstances.
I just realized the mystery chick has a spot on his head and butt lol
Okay, so I am going with Barred Rock or Dominique, I don't think it is a Cuckoo Marans given the face coloring, but can't completely rule that out. I didn't get a good enough look at the comb area...but within a week or two you will probably be able to tell if it is a BR or Dominique by the comb, particularly if it is a boy, as they pop sooner. @rural mouse - do you agree with my assessment, or am I missing something?I got a surprise for you! omg sorry about my breathing ! oops wrong view lol
OMG yes could really be a Domonique! The chick looks exactly like mine!Okay, so I am going with Barred Rock or Dominique, I don't think it is a Cuckoo Marans given the face coloring, but can't completely rule that out. Well, at least it didn't come to 'fist-to-cuffs'Maybe. Hopefully.
But Bernie is pushy, and I think a natural leader (remember how she commanded the Hooligans even though she couldn’t use her leg), without her sisters to command she shows signs of trying to lead Maggie and Diana.
She took Diana’s spot on the roost and didn’t give in for a really long time even though both Maggie and Diana were staring at her.
“The cheek!”
