Lazy day here today, I went and checked some hay, got 10 bales to try with my gals - they love it!

So told buddy I would take 500 of them, guess what I will be doing next Saturday, and guess how hot and humid it likely be 🥺. Now to find some slave labour to help me with them!

Just chillaxing now with the chickies. Took a couple more mug shots 😊

Truly checking out the new hay I was unloading, I threw a bale in the hay hut for them and they went gaga for it.

Oh yes, 500 bales will require slave labor. It will be worth it in the end though if your horses love it and are actually eating it. Do you have some teenage neighbor boys you can recruit for a few hours close by?

But

I thought the darker one was already named Kat.
It was. The problem arose yesterday when I informed Rosie what I planned on calling them. She wants the darker one to be called Kit. I will get my way though and it will be called Kat. After all, if I had not assisted the hatch there would be no Kat. Plus, my birthday is Wednesday, she refers to these chicks as my birthday present. If that is so, I get to name them.

So, a local food pantry gets 'damaged' stuff from farmers and stuff ready to go bad/expire from grocery stores. It is delivered on Mondays, so I went yesterday to see what was left. (sometimes stuff comes in those huge boxes that grocery stores sell watermelons & pumpkins out of!) , as it is free for anyone who wants it (I try to wait, though, so people who need it take it first) I got a load of carrots, some mushrooms, red cabbage, green beans, a couple of zuchinni, and a small head of broccoli. I'm in the process of cooking that up for 'chop.' When it is done cooking and I go to process it in the food processor, I also got 3 small red pears, a container of strawberries, and a container of mixed berries (small) and also a small pkg of 'spicy' microgreens that I will add in! I'm so stoked! Once I add in my oatmeal and a few seeds, I think I will have close to 3 gal. to package!!! While this won't last long this winter given the number of birds I have, it is, imo, a great start. [I feed 1-2 quarts at a time, twice a week in the winter if I have that much, and then I also grow a bunch of fodder...that I also try to give twice a week, but usually ends up 1x week regularly, and a second batch periodically, as, again, with so many birds, I can only fit so much on my windowsills!]

So, while this is chicken related, I still feel I owe tax/pictures of some sort:

1st batch cooked (I have a 1 gal. pot, so this is a little less than 1 gal. BEFORE being put through the food processor)

And, some of the littles that will enjoy it this winter:

They are growing up so quickly! 2 weeks old this past Wed....they will soon be in the 'fugly' stage I love so much! 🥰
Well, clearly I over-estimated! I got 4 full quarts plus a bit extra (that I fed the girls this afternoon) Amazing how much the 'volume' shrinks when 'chopped' in the food processor (and that is with the non-cooked fruit, greens, oatmeal and seeds/grains. Well, while I had hoped for more, I am quite happy to have some put up already - even if it is only 2 weeks worth.

So, for the 9 teens/tweens. I am now confident there are 4 girls and 5 boys. In the first photo, the one at the very bottom, and the one on the upper right are girls. Those two plus the two blackish ones are the four girls. (one of the 'blackish' ones is in the second photo.)

Do you call them "heads" in Canada. Here we call them "ears"?
Huh, heads sound better. I've always felt like EARs of corns is so weird. Is there any legitimacy to it? Is it because they look like ears on the stalk??

One terrible thing about Chinese is that you have to use a "classifier" for everything you mention, like "ear" is the classifier for "corn", but imagine all the stuff has a classifier and they are often different. Something like a bang of book, a stick of pencil, a load of TV... 🤣
