It’s a good 9’ up….
I watched one of my pullets fly up a good 8 feet from the ground to the tree branch to escape a pursuing roo. Add in the distance from the tree to start (5 or 6 feet), figure the hypotenuse (or however that's spelled, not the hypertension that autocorrect is suggesting), and she flew...um.... @bgmathteach how far?

My point...properly motivated, they could make it.

I received a call from home. Seems that my little scheme worked. I’m headed back home to testify, and get my chooks back home where they belong.
(I cannot go into any other details)
The birds are all safe and healthy though.
I'm so happy to hear that. Good news indeed.

I love them, they are adorable. I do have to ask though, how old are they? I have 2 types of PTSD, broody's and "OMG another boy." That last chick pictured, would start to scare me. With Marans, or Marans mixes, if I see the hint of wattles or comb with color starting BEFORE 9ish weeks, I panic. Most of my Marans and mixes if they are boys let themselves be known between 2 to 4 weeks. I have had a few late developers who I thought were girls pop comb and wattles overnight up to 9 weeks.

She flew 10', assuming the distance to tree was the 6', not the 5'. :D

I have a few chickens molting. I had been averaging a dozen eggs a week until about 4 days ago. I then started getting 8 to 10. Ok, molting is starting, Bunny is broody no big deal. Started to pull down a bale of hay from the top of the pile and a egg falls and breaks. What the heck? Grab a step ladder what do I find, a nest of 9 more eggs. 4 from Holly and the rest looked to be from one or two of the new girls. You know what is odd, besides back in the spring when she gave up 2 weeks in, Holly has not been broody this year. Until this year Holly has hatched 2 or 3 clutches per season. My eye is already twitching and my PTSD is starting to kick back into overdrive. I suspect Holly or one of the new girls is plotting something.
