Abject Failure

The whole pumpkin carving thing is going to be left to the human this year. Again.

This is the most interest it got. When I put it down.

Said pumpkin today, days later.

Alarm!

Just now Lady Featherington gave the aerial predator alarm for the first time. Here is how everyone took cover.

In this instance it was not Satan but rather a turkey vulture. None-the-less, great work on her part and proof that she is already serving as sentinel.

Corn in Slow Motion

I haven't done slow motion in a while so Lady Featherington obliged me this morning. Watch as she pecks some corn. The head shake on the first kernel is interesting and I love the tongue working on the second kernel.

By the way, if you enjoy my videos, it is OK to "like" them. 😉

It's another beautiful day here, with 25° and clear blue skies... and no rain forecast for the next two weeks 😔.

I loved seeing the pictures and videos of the new chicks. At that age, they are definitely cuter than human babies!

Molting : I don't have many seasons to compare. The first fall they were here, our six ex-batts didn't molt, and the next year we had one hard molt after Vanille had been very ill at the end of September, and Nougat molted in December but it barely showed, though she was acting very off for a month.
This year we have a crazy molt. It started with Cannelle at the end of August, then Chipie and Théo, and also the four younger chickens who had just got on their adult feathers 😬. It's far from over and Cannelle has the worse of it. They began loosing head feathers, then tail feathers, then wings, and now the body and neck. My other ex-batts are also molting, but not as badly.
I can't wait for it to be over. Like it happened with Maggie I hate not knowing if they are acting off because of the molt or if there is something else.

Thirsty pictures:
I didn't manage to catch it on camera but Gastounet spills water every where when he drinks.

I also think that molting is a big stress on their bodies and therefore if they are susceptible to something else it may happen during the molt.
Several chicken viruses (including Marek's and the one that Bella had) can go dormant in the body but then re-emerge at times of stress. I suspect this is what happened to Maggie and that her molt pushed her over the edge from something else she was living with before.
Going back over my Maggie files I also found something odd which is that she molted in February of this year too. I had forgotten that. So an October molt was very, very early for her.

I love the synchronized drinking!

That’s how I lost the beautiful Beetov-Hen. During her molt. :( Hen-Rietta is in the middle of hers now too and I’m worried.
