Wow - looking good! I did not know an expansion was planned. I bet they love it.
I have been planning to do it all summer. In the winter with the porch covered with clear shower curtains it becomes like a green house and they will sunbathe there. Well, before the expansion the porch was only big enough for 2 hens. Now it should hold 4 maybe 5.

I'm considering adding another sun porch off the big run to catch the winter sun as well. I have a house window I believe I could repurpose as part of the design.

Rosie was still hop limping this evening, luckily she seems to be resting lots too. She wasn't thrilled about having to soak her foot, but we got about 8.5 min in.

Under Construction

I did not have time to replace the coop roof today but i did have time to expand the porch so more hens can sunbathe this winter.

First I had to disassemble the existing porch without wrecking it. I then had to expand the sides to the limit of the roof.

I then had to put a floor on the porch. This is going to make it significantly heavier but by expanding it I am going beyond the coop base so I need the floor to be part of the porch.

This did create a space under the porch that I would need to close with a cross piece under the floor. I had to patch the floor together as I had no plywood pieces large enough for the entire floor.

Here it is prior to painting.

Then it was time for painting and installation of hardware cloth.

Betty chose to throw new straw all over it as I cleaned the coop and gave them new straw. Everyone was partying in the new straw. Except Sydney, she just went to bed.
