Today chickens discovered a not so small frog (or toad, not sure). It was bigger than what they usually like, so all lost interest after 2 seconds EXCEPT FOR Foxy. Foxy is apparently the little hunter in the flock.

She was the only one that kept working on it. She even ignored the dinner. After Foxy working on it for HOURS, we finally saw that they've eaten the guts of the frog (poor froggy), but Foxy was still playing with the skin part .

Oh, in the form of extra eggs when your girls happen to be taking a long siesta?? What a thoughtful person he is!!

If only he thought that way. They have ducks which hatch off ducklings every year, kittens from their barn cats and a few pregnant mini horses. Plus, apparently the chicks I gave her last year ended up being 1 roo and 3 hens. They have had chicks themselves this spring and summer. He argued why did she need another boy when she had hatched off 4 more of her own so far this year. She told him yes she had boys, but she did not have a silkie so she needed it. If he wanted to be mean and make me pay, he easily could.

Her 'friend', surprisingly enough, stays in their box.....EXCEPT when I take gimpy girl out for therapy...then she doesn't like being alone and gets into trouble! Here she is escaping their box:

So, I thought they could both use a bit of time out of their Tiny Home, and brought her out after therapy session with Gim

this is super hopeful, she’s looking great… and she’s young, I think she is going to recover just fine.she might limp, but 100% better than I was expecting to see

Can you see/tell what is wrong? Sore/infection, sprained ankle/foot? (i.e. any obvious tenderness if you touch near/around any joints? Any redness or swelling anywhere? Any limit to what she will allow if you check her ROM?

I'm hoping it is a simple sprain/twist that will gradually get better with time. Will she stay in a sling if you make one for her? @Kris5902 has a great pic of a sling she has made/

FYI: I've found, for my chickens, they don't stay in the sling well unless they are really sick/badly injured. However, orps tend to be a bit more easy going and Rose might be compliant. though not sure on that since she doesn't seem to like a foot soak, and many of mine have really enjoyed the warm epsom salts soak...and will frequently sit for 20 min...or more (mainly until the water cools!)

Agreed. Sardines are small so they haven't had the chance to accumulate heavy metal. Sardines are very good for you, and your chooks.

I am sure they will love it this winter They love sunbathing...and the greenhouse effect will be quite welcome, I'm sure!

I don't know how you feel about this, but you can give a hen a baby asprin (1, 81 mg. for a roughly 5 lb. hen. Or Ibuprofen - liquid children's is easiest for both giving & getting the dosage right. Either will help both with pain and inflammation.

I read an article on BYC regarding ibuprofen dosing for chickens. I'll have to find it again, I'll edit this post to add it when I do (probably tomorrow, it is late now & I'm exhausted, so going to bed!

Rosie was still hop limping this evening, luckily she seems to be resting lots too. She wasn't thrilled about having to soak her foot, but we got about 8.5 min in.View attachment 3307161
