Damage!

It looks like Glynda caught frostbite in the last cold snap. It has taken a few days for it to show up but it has the potential to take all of her comb tips. Only time will tell. I have some hope since it has taken this long for it to show up.

No one else is any the worse for the cold snap. Just Glynda. This will be the first time one of mine has ever suffered from frostbite. 😕
And her wattle edges too. This is odd. Hope it doesn't hurt too much, but it doesn't look very swollen, does it? I'm looking back but can't easily find whether she was always in the Cluckle Hut when roosting, or stayed in both coops different nights. Does she drape her head down and not tuck her head under a wing? Could this somehow happen while not roosting, due to the persistent cold? It was so warm and relatively humid previously, then got so cold, so suddenly.

It's about that here in Japan at the hotel but slightly cooler at the well site
10C or 50F yahooo!

Have the chooks outside, no snow left worth talking about! But we are under a rainfall advisory.

Oh no! Well that sucks! But if that’s the worse that happens…..

Ameraucana is a breed from the US derived from the Chilian Araucana they lay true blue eggs. Spelling is important here as they are often misspelled (on purpose) at farm stores as they are are actually crossbreeds called Easter Eggers.

I have both Easter Eggers and one actual Ameraucana here she is, she is the dark gray bird. They have gun metal grey legs with beards not green legs like many Easter Eggers do.

Both are awesome!

Easter Eggers are often crossed with Ameraucanas though not always and can lay various levels of blue or green or brown eggs depending on the cross. ;)

I think I have that all right someone here with more experience can correct me if I have gone amiss.

Link on info/history of Ameraucana. Easter Eggers are a mixed breed, generally laying blue to light green eggs, but also brown, with some distant genetics from Auracauna - giving them the blue gene. Olive Eggers are Ameraucana or EEs crossed with a dark brown laying breed, such as Marans.

Ameraucanas were developed out of the EE to meet certain standards of perfection - including but not limited to laying BLUE eggs.

But she dont answer me.
She selects one question, from all she has received, to answer each week.

I certainly wouldn't expect her to answer more than that - what with having to put so much thought into her answers🤔, sometimes research, too, PLUS typing one letter👇 at a time with her beak - it is amazing that she was willing to take this on!:clap

Oh geez, I found a weakness in Coco! She seems to love guitar music and vocals. Soon as I put some on the laptop, she started singing to the tunes…… darn priceless!! She’s no fake rock bgmathteach!
We definitely need video next time.

That sucks, and I can empathize. Some of mine don’t look quite as bad a ls a few days ago, so hopefully won’t lose too much. Pics below from today.

Hello! I am new here, but I saw that today is Fluffy Butt Friday. Here are three of my chickens best Fluffy Butts from this morning! My rooster, Pastel and his adorable lady Bolt next to him. Then the one that wanted to be alone, Splotch, with a fine Fluffy Butt, as she did not lay yet today 🤣 I have a RIR named BBQ, but she didn't want a picture of her fine Fluffy Butt today...I have four chickens: Pastel- a Bared Rock mixed with a Black Australorp- Bolt- A Buff Ameracuna mix- BBQ- Rhode Island Red mix- Splotch- Bared Rock mixed with Black Australorp. I also have 16 guinea fowl 🙄
Welcome!

Oh wow. That is a tad fancier than what I have.
I could use a trickle charger but it has 4 terminals and I don’t understand that!
If the replacement battery doesn’t solve the problem and I end up buying a new energizer I may have to go for something like that.
I do have mains electric but I was told that is an issue for electric fences because the GFI trips and cuts off the power whenever an animal grounds the fence.
That is why I went battery, and then solar felt more ‘set and forget’ than needing to bring the battery indoors to charge.
Pics of the battery might help us give tips on charging.

Quick question- is Bolt an Easter egger or and Ameracuna? She has green legs and lays olive green eggs. She has Muffs and a beard... I do believe she is a mixed breed- maybe a mix of both?
I agree with what some others have said, either an EE or an OE, most likely OE. Where did you get her from?

Dear Queen-In-Waiting Bernadette,

As @Ponypoor pointed out in a letter to you, additional chickens may not necessarily be a bad thing! This could present opportunities. Yes, Diana is an experienced Queen but the presence of many small subjects running around getting into all sorts of trouble will be a distraction for her. Do not worry for yourself, this is a chance to hone your skills! They will provide plenty of easy body-checking and pecking practice. More importantly, they will be small and easily controlled and will want to make friends. So you will get many hours of benevolent domination under your crop. Diana will be too busy to notice as you maneuver and gain their support for your eventual coup! She may even thank you.

Yours in plotting,
Hazel
