Your gonna be away for 4 months? Will you be on here at all? I'm sorry!
Oh yes I will be checking in every day. I work in the wilds of Northern Alberta - I reside in a work camp for pipelining about 300km south of the North West Territories.

You will hear me whine constantly about the cold and snow haha.

Today I am leaving Toronto and it’s +2C (36F). And n Alberta it is…. oh hey! It’s fairly mild woohoo right now it is -4C (21F), and that will be the high for the day!! Yay!

Usually it will be -30C hahaha

I just hope my truck doesn’t have 3’ of snow n it to clean off! Hate winter 🤨

Today's egg haul.View attachment 3364304The light brown one on the lower right is small enough to be new(ish) layer. Problem is I've no idea if it's from the pullets or one of the adults first egg post moult. If it's a pullet, it has to be Brahma or sussex (and I'm 90% positive both Nox and Mera have been laying)....

This is the first day of more than 1-2 (if that many) since the deep cold just before Christmas....it also puts my current egg count at approx 7.5 dozen. As another lady I work with is interested in eggs (they hit over $5/dozen here this week commercially), it's a good thing. On the other hand, I have no trouble telling people no eggs available at the moment so it all works.

On rooster behavior today, I saw Horus chase off Cheetah multiple times, but I also saw Cheetah go after Hector. Someone mentioned the speed of Leghorns (Horus has his mother's build). Cheetah left him in the dust......with ease....
Beautiful haul!

Ok all I need to get up at 02:45am; have an early flight back to work 😟 I put the chickies to bed, went and saw the horses - I will miss everyone but soon it will be April and I will be home again 😊

It guards a goat and the chickens- and the general property. She is bred to be wary of strangers, not be food motivated so that strangers can't bribe or lure her. She is also huge and only 8 months old- when she is full grown she will be massive- mainly to deter the bear.
She is a mix between two LGD breeds, I've forgotten the names- they are rather complicated names. Her mom and dad she was raised with guarded animals.
Are you actively working on training her? 8 months old is still young, and even LGD breeds still need to be trained. I hope she was let know that that was wrong, so she knows not to do it again. being still a puppy, they will want to play and such...plus they are so receptive to training right now...you want good habits set before bad ones take hold.

I thought you had a guide book now?
I consulted the guidebook while waiting for the water to boil for tea.
In good news, I know my RIRs!
In bad news I am completely befuddled by Leghorns.
I can recognize one like Daisy (GHE), and I know that several of you have ones that are red with gold around their necks, though I am not sure I could recognize those as Leghorns without being told.
But the guidebook tells me that Leghorns can also be (and I quote): black, buff, cuckoo, blue, golden duckwing, silver duckwing, exchequer, black mottled, red mottled and partridge.
Are those all colors?! At least partridge and cuckoo are actually birds and duckwing sounds like it should be!
