Our Environmental Inspector took me to were this lovely creature was, and there he/she was snoozing in the sun; it -7C and no wind so a nice winter day for a North Creature.

I called to it and it barely opened its eyes to likely tell me 'buzz off Human, I am snoozing in the sun' Only about 20' from the road!

Gosh, I thought THIS was busy!!! Cant imagine keeping up with more. Like so many, I have a full time job. I try to catch up and really, I skip most non-chicken posts since I mostly lurk and well, I don't know anyone really, so personal stuff feels a bit...personal.



LOL! You mean it's possible to tell a chicken what to do? I'm flattered by all the compliments to my cluckers.

Went to visit the chickens and took them some left over potato salad. They like my cooking better than i do. Got my two morning eggs today and was surprised to find that the girls didn't lay on the golf balls, but made a new nest off to the side! Still where I want it, just opposite side of the box, which is big enough to make two boxes if I wanted. Yesterday I noticed they'd moved the balls off to the side of the nest, instead of laying right there with them. Are the balls not fooling anyone, I wonder?

Should I leave eggs longer than I do? How long can you leave a fertile egg in the nest? No one's broody...which is good. I have picked them up still warm at times. I don't want them to change spots because they feel the nest box isn't "safe". Advice anyone?

Always leave a couple of real eggs in the nest for a few weeks. That helps to make it seem safe.

Wow they sure don't take long to grow up do they? Is that Naked Neck you have there?


FYI - Silkie Roos - you won't know if it's a pullet or Roo until they either crow or lay an egg! So you will have them for around 6 months before you know!


I don't have time to truly catch up - I do a search for people who I know have important items happening IE: chicks, questions about coops, etc...


Actually takes me an hour and a half in the evening to catch up, I am up at 4:30am, work a 12hr day (6 days a week), come home around 6pm, cook supper (when the camp has nothing I want which is most days), then shower and jump into bed by 8pm - many times I am reading in bed to catch up Mostly I am just skimming not truly reading - looking at the photos


Oh Bliss! I could feel it here as you were describing it thanks! I also needed that break! I can't wait to get home this time around - thanks for that lovely little break with the chickies

I have never seen a lynx in the wild. Very cool.

(Blushing) I think it is more luck and my unwillingness to say uncle until it is clear they will suffer, not heal. I really don't know what I am doing medically -just read a lot ahead of time, keep fingers crossed, and go for it. I really have no alternative here other than to just give up and help them pass. I'm a bit too stubborn for that if I think there is a chance!

You are doing amazing. Don't ever change.

Wonderful dr visit today. I'm not going to lie, I tend to hate endocrinologist appointments, but today was indeed a very good one. She downloaded the sensor data and we discussed it. She was very pleased that it had allowed me to prevent some lows and correct highs quicker. My A1C is a 7.2. That is not perfect, but with this sensor data and the lab work last month she went ahead and was able to order the Omnipod insulin pump. She expected it would take roughly a week to come in. She told me once I have it, I have to go online and register it and then set up a appointment with their representative to train me on it. She gave me a estimate of roughly 2 to 3 weeks before I would be able to use it. I got home and called my pharmacy to get a rough idea on when it would be in. Good news, will be in by noon tomorrow. Hopefully this means sometime next week I can have that training appointment and start using it sooner then expected. Our goal is once I'm back on the pump it will be easier to tighten up my numbers and get my A1C back in the 6 range.

That sounds great! Im glad it went well I love Drs. appts. that go smoothly. This lady is on her way and will be here in an hour for the girls. Got all 4 of them ready to go. Im keeping at least one or 2 chicks for myself.....shhhhh dont tell hubby lol. Chicken math has me bad!!!

The whole purpose of allowing the 3 girls to hatch chicks last October was so that I would have some pullets available this spring. When I set the hens none were supposed to stay. The chicks hatched, ooh, a blueberry mini me....I must keep that one. Fast forward 4 months later and those pullets that were supposed to be sold. Back away people....they are mine, all mine, my preciouses. Then we add to that the marshmallows, yes, chicken math is very real. A word of warning when you set your silkie eggs. Be prepared to either keep all that hatch at least 4 to 5 months to determine your hens and roosters, or pick out a few at a day or two old and sell the rest and cross your fingers. If you choose to hang on to them all and grow them out, I promise you, you will end up keeping more then you planned as they will have you wrapped around their double toes in just a few days.
