Here is my girls old nest with a fake egg in it.View attachment 3422550
And here is their new nest that I made today... hopefully they lay in it! There is an older Bolt egg which is the green one, and then the fake egg... I just put the fake egg in the old nest for the picture. View attachment 3422553
That's a lovely egg - love that colour! That fake egg sure looks real :)

I may ride him eventually... Sorry for the misunderstanding, I did not explain it very well... I was at a friends house who has horses... not my instructors place 🤣 If Boon was at my instructors place, I would probably ditch Lenny in an instant 🤣 Next time I go over to her place, I will try to get pictures of the horses. Edit: by me possibly riding him, I mean like, begging his owner to let me hop on 😂
hahaha poor Lenny! Well I hope you get a chance to ride Big Ol Boon :)

Thank you! On the thread I made, someone said she is a Barnevelder... I looked it up, and sure enough she is!
I think they also lay very dark brown eggs, once she starts laying you should have a good idea.
You can't rescue every chicken, but you can advocate for system changes too, which can help many more chickens. As you say these are deeply-ingrained issues and huge businesses. Huge because the market is massive. Change may be slow unless you get the right mix of people and circumstances to make legal changes to how businesses are run. Greater change can come but people have to become aware. I didn't know about a lot of this until recently myself. How about raising awareness of these among your friends and neighbors? Maybe you can get involved with them and help your local farms implement changes?

Certified Humane program https://certifiedhumane.org/ which is a step in the right direction

Same with the Vital Farms program https://vitalfarms.com/?gclid=CjwKC...KwWRbfCovua10H9_rO8t2iMQPKt1KljxoCOUMQAvD_BwE which appears even better but is pretty ambitious in it's whole-farmland approach

This is interesting, hens that lay only pullets. The cynic in me knows that these chickens / the way they achieved this will be patented and incredibly expensive for others to do. I don't know how far along anyone is in actually running a hatchery anywhere in the world with these. But it is an example of potential and hopefully positive change on the industrial side. https://www.calcalistech.com/ctechnews/article/bkc3iyioj

The Buckeyes intermittent news: someone, not Popcorn (because I know her cute little round eggs) is laying massive eggs, 72 grams. I suspect Butters, or maybe Peanut. It would be great if it is Hazel because she laid a shell-less egg about ten days ago, after acting fairly uncomfortable and unhappy. Only the membrane. I've upped the calcium yogurt bread bits mix and made sure she gets some. However I just got Nutrena Hearty Hen 18% protein for them which is a layer feed. Hope that will help. I haven't researched calcium in their water yet.

There was another earlier this week or late last week, exactly the same, 72 grams, light-colored like this latest one. Here it is in the middle of the carton.

I stopped marking them with the permanent marker last week, because I'm also giving them back the shells crushed to eat. What's a food-grade marker or crayon I could use?
WOW that is one huge egg!

What about just using a pencil? you can rub the pencil off before crushing the shells... ?

Wow that is an interesting concept but I worry about it's use in other area such as human reproduction, and wonder exactly how this is accomplished.

I would rather do the 'checking of eggs for sex' at day 2 or 3 of incubation instead. Those eggs can still be used for eating and in food production. And thus not worry about not producing males.

Ive had 5 double yolkers in the past week. That poor Ancona is hurtin.
Poor gal - sure hope that she settles down with that soon. I have been told it's generally young hens that give those double yolkers, so once she gets older she should be ok
Also on the news, these ladies love broccoli. Raw, chopped in nice bits to grab and eat. They love it!

Here is BBQ. Her eyes are the same as everyone else. View attachment 3422673
Is she eating ok? any sneezing or breathing issues? If not them keep an eye (no pun intended) on her to make sure all is ok. Is she running with your other chickens? There are diseases out there that cause white discharge, just keep an eye on it. If it gets worse, there are antibiotics you can get from a Vet to help ease any bacterial issues.

Hope you feel better soon.

She is running around with everyone else. To everything else no, not as far as I know. We have two vets around here who take chickens, so if I need to, I will take her in, or maybe I will call one soon... Barnevelders do lay super dark eggs, which I am eggcited for! I've never had one of those! Haha, Lenny would be happy to ditch me!

Just keep an eye on her, there are bacterial infections that cause white discharge but at this stage since is running around with everyone its too late to separate if she does have something. As long as she is eating and drinking I wouldn't worry about it.

Oh I a sure Lenny enjoys the attention you give him :)

I posted it on another thread, and someone said it is her second eyelid, but then why would it be so large, when everyone else's is smaller? I don't think that it is discharge, but it's weird. If my girls lay in their old nest instead of their new one I made, should I fill in their old nest with dirt or hay?
