Here they are! The one with her derriere up in the air in the last photo is Twinkie the tiny dwarf/runt. I already love her so much, she keeps hiding under everyone for snuggles and warmth. The one who i suspect is a rooster is on the far right.

Yes, Éowyn is a Maine Coon. She weighs 20 lbs, is a yard long without her tail and stands nearly 2 feet tall. She's a big lady.

Maine Coons are lovely. The ear tufts are so precious.

I’m sure they loved that. My little cockerel is going nuts for it already, i don’t even see him in the corner of my eye and he swoops in, steals the corn and runs off into a corner.

Out of curiosity, do yours eat things like lettuce? I hear people talking about their chickens eating lettuce head but mine just shake their head at it.

Lettuce is one of Hattie’s favorites!

I generally purchase chicks through a hatchery (or get reduced ones through TSC - which is Hoover Hatchery - and still vaccinated) Mine are all vaccinated for Marecks. Some - depending on hatchery, if offered - are vaccinated for coccidosis. However, I do have a number that have hatched on site and aren't vaccinated. The smallest vial of Vaccine I could find for Mareck's vaccinated 1000 birds, and is just too expensive for only needing it for a few. Especially, like last year, when I had 2 broodies hatch chicks and then about 7 weeks later another broody hatch some. The first vial would have been no longer good, and I would have had to buy 2 separate vials -for 13 chicks!

Getting anti-biotics for my chickens is impossible. The only reason I was able to give Crop Girl some post surgery is because I had a knee replacement (recent) and have to take a prophylactic anti-biotic before dental cleanings - which I do more often than average due to issues...and I opened one of those capsules, mixed with water, and dosed her accordingly from that.

You are absolutely correct - the veterinary and pharmaceutical world needs to get on the stick and accommodate Chickens/small farmers and backyard farm animals/pets.

Did you get them at a TSC location, or order through their website and then call Hoovers to get them vaccinated? Everything I have read and the TSC employees I have talked to all say that the chicks in the stores have no vaccinations of any kind. But if you order and then contact Hoovers you can request they be vaccinated for Marek’s and/or coccidiosis. That is what I did, mine are vaccinated for both.

You should be able to order antibiotics through a few websites, some without a prescription. I have links somewhere that I found posted various places and saved to order some when needed. Will try to post them later.

Just got back from checking my chicks and...either Manny's been hiding something or someone's been overactive! I got 3 eggs yesterday. I don't think I missed any before that. Is it even possible for a hen to lay 2 in one day?

The little monsters act like they don't have two full feeders in the coop! I sat the little bowl of leftover greens down while i was opening the gate and they practically hit the fence like the raptors in Jurassic Park! I finally managed to get a couple pics of my camera shy Meanie - who's beard is certainly nothing compared to the glorious Aurora - maybe that's why she avoids photos? I also think it is only the Marek’s vaccine that there is concern about mixing vaccinated and unvaccinated. It is considered a “leaky” vaccine, similar to the Covid vaccine. Meaning you can still get sick with the disease (and pass it to others) but it will be a milder case. So if you have chickens who have been vaccinated you could still have the disease in the property. Which means if you bring in unvaccinated ones they can catch it and be much worse. And on the flip side if none of yours are vaccinated and your property is “clean”, and then you bring in vaccinated chickens they could actually bring the disease with them.

It's very late and I'm too tired to post on this. I will gather my thoughts and describe what the details around the Marek's vaccine are tomorrow work permitting.

@Ponypoor I really need to thank you. I guess since Rosie is not coming down with strep but other respiratory viruses as well it never crossed my mind that her tonsils could be part of the problem. That and she is almost 15, around here at least, tonsils get taken out before they are 10. Discussed it at her doctor appointment today and he looked at them closely and agreed that they are a big part of her problem. They are very enlarged and he wants them removed. There is a hiccup in the process though and of course it is insurance. Because she has not tested positive for strep 10 times in a year she first has to have a sleep study done to check for sleep apnea to be approved. We discussed the signs of it and I am confident and so is he that she has at least mild sleep apnea. She cannot sleep flat on her back without snoring almost immediately. He also said just due to her tonsils size he bets she has it, said that they were a +3, what ever that means. They are working to get the sleep study scheduled. I'm hoping it will not take too long and hopefully in the next month or two be able to get those tonsils removed. Her doctor seemed hopeful that realistically it should be able to be scheduled in about a month.
