I'm not sure the wood will handle changing the eye. But will be investigating the options.
You could use an eye BOLT not a screw. Then you could put a washer on the back side before the nut and it should hold better (actually, put a washer on both sides, and screw the bolt down tight so that the 'eye' is against the washer/wood on the outside. That might be a bit overkill, but it will certainly hold! They make some fairly thin eye bolts - 1/4 in diameter rod/bolt. Just add the appropriate sized washers (2), 1 each side of the wood.
