Babies confirmed at Butler Hollow Coop!!!!

I went out with mash as I have done almost every day for Brownie to have a snack and get some water and with some patience out comes this one:

I see the scratch on its beak and she scolded this one pretty harshly for coming out. I was worried and said screw it I need to see of the rest are ok or if Brownie is a great sitter but a horrible mom. I know this happens, rare but possible. So I lifted her up gently and set her on the ground. I counted 6 fully fluffed out we ones. Mama got right back in the nest with them and didn’t hurt them at all. Here are a few more photos of them.

No meanness after that one incident, should I be concerned or was she simply trying to protect that baby from me and the cold? Thoughts? The rest seem perfectly unscathed and very lively.

It is cold and they are new she does not want them out from under her yet. She also will want them to stay mostly under her as long as she has unhatched eggs so do not panic. My girls chicks who are over a week old and several days old first thing in the mornings momma wants them under her. There is a difference between gentle scolding pecks and nudges and full on viscous attacks. I bet when you are not out looking she may allow them out from under her for a few minutes at a time. She is teaching them by tucking them back under her that she is their heat source. Remember, chickens do not have hands, the only thing they have is their beaks. Congrats to you and Brownie, they are adorable.

This is exactly what I needed to hear right now! Thank you for posting this. I will leave them be and trust my sweet girl who got them this far.

Really good thanks, it ran like crazy all night but the moisture did encourage healing.

I am digging out my safety goggles next time! Those kiddos are just hilarious, they have a taste for freedom and there is no containing them. And wow can the fly, esp wee Martina! She must have leghorn in her ha! She has learnt that not only can she run and hide on the ground, but there is a whole new world in the vertical, and up is the way to go!

Yesterday she figured out those stairs that I have in the hen house, soon I bet I will be able to let them roost there at night. Another month I bet.

And the other chicks are a week old now, and they also are thriving. Today I will try to get them and mamas outside it’s supposed to be sunny and warm. The silkies are just sooooo tiny!

Glad your eye is better today. What I hear is more baby pictures on the way

I did it! The babies have moved out of their tent in my bathroom and into the brooder box in the Chicken Palace. I will keep them confined in there for a day or so before giving them a tour of the whole place so they know how to dodge and weave.
Like the anxious mother hen that I am, I was worried that they wouldn't find the food and water in their new home. So I was trying to figure how to dunk their beaks and show them the ropes.
I needn't have worried. Pigletine to the rescue! She has an uncanny ability to find food and was tucking in before I had unloaded all her buddies.
I can't get any of them interested in going under the heat plate - they are too excited about the extra space to run around in. I will try again later and definitely as it starts to cool down this evening.
And because it is Friday here is a very tiny fluffy butt.

I have a mission today, I need to get some chick pictures. The size difference between Gryffyns 2 chick is mind boggling. The blue one is a large fowl cochin x Marans mix and is huge compared to it's silkie cross sibling. There is also a size difference between Goose's 3 biological chicks and the pure silkie. It is not nothing compared to Gryffyns 2 but it is noticeable. Those 2 tiny chicks though are spitfires. Nothing fazes them and they are first in line when Momma finds a treat.

Hello everybody! I feel like it's been forever since I've posted! I'm glad to be back! And I've got a couple of surprises! So, recently I've suffered a pretty bad injury to my left leg, but I'm getting better.
So.... in all that time I've been away from my BYC friends a lot has happened, my boyfriend gave me the idea to start a garden!
So I said.... okay! I've got a huge backyard I'm practically wasting! I had a great friend of mine plow up the field, I got it tilled, and soon it was ready for planting! A few days ago, I planted some tomatoes and bell pepper plants, and planted some squash and cucumber seeds! And a special little area for sunflowers! I'll be sure to get you guys some photos soon!

Okay.... sorry to make this so long but I know you all pretty much adore baby chicks! So, the news, I got new chicks! They are white leghorns. I already have 3 white leghorns now that are about exactly a year old, and a six year old RIR hen, who is sometimes sweet, but always sassy lol. Anyways, 7 new additions arrived today! And all look happy and healthy so far! I did buy a few save a chick packets just in case of an emergency. You've been waiting long enough, I'm ready to share photos of the chicks!

I'm sorry about your injury but glad to hear you are on the mend. Have fun with your garden. Yay for a new group of Marshmallows. It does not seem like that long ago when my Marshmallow Mafia were tiny innocent fluff balls. Now they are teenage stalkers with a thirst for violence towards songbirds and cats and general trouble making. I swear before long one is going to be on the roof. They hop up on the 4-wheeler and look at the barn roof. They are plotting and calculating and it is only a matter of time.
