The food is moved out of the coop and I am gonna keep it bare ground for a few days until I am well enough to go find all tunnels. Seems I have covid again.
On a cheerier note, I let Brownie and the chicklets out while I cleaned the tent out seeing as how it seems they will be in there for at least another 2 weeks, thanks to the Rat issue. 🤦‍♀️ Here are some cute pictures, they are finally getting curious about me.

Disaster struck my little coop.

Last Sunday I got two new hens, bear and fifi

I was so excited and made a post about them last Sunday showing them off. But the next day when I went to check on them a fox had destroyed the coop and took bear(the white hen) with him and left fifi(the black hen) alone,in shock and terrified😥.
I then got in contact with the person I bought them from and he said I could pick up another hen today, so fifi wouldn’t be alone anymore yay!!
Fifi had a very hard time recovering from loosing her best friend, didn’t really eat and didn’t really have any spirit left in her but I have hope, as she has gotten better🎉

Today I went and picked up another isabell marans just a little bit more lavender in color than bear and put her with fifi, so far it’s going okay they have exchanged some small little clucks and seem to get along. I should note that fifi and the new hen has been together since they hatched and came from the same place so they do know each other but aren’t as close as fifi and bear was😊

They are right now inside for the night and tomorrow will go to a coop but they will sleep inside at night so they don’t get hurt again and so the fox can’t get them😊
Holy cow. Such a tragedy. :hugs :hugs :hugs

Know that the fox will come back so be certain that you fox proof your coop. They are very cute together and I'm glad you got Fifi a new friend. Chickens are social creatures and they need to have friends.

And need to figure out the dose for Meloxicam (it’s 0.6mg/kg - she is 410kg, I have 15mg tablets for myself so need to figure out how many tablets to give her - @bgmathteach ??). 😊
That's easy:

0.6mg/kg X 410kg/1 X 1tab/15 mg = 16.4 tablets
[this type of mathematical procedure is called unit analysis; using the units to set up the problem correctly.]

Given that 0.4 of a tablet is only about 2% of that overall dose, you could go with 16 tablets and not worry about cutting/breaking one.

The real question, though, is if the dosage is the same for horses as for people. Different animals metabolize thing differently, and might have a different dosage requirements. For example: an 'average' sized (~4-5 lbs) chicken can have an 81 mg. aspirin tablet. If I took 81 mg. tablets (1 per 5 lbs), I would be taking over 3,000 mg of aspirin. That is way too much for a human dose. (i.e. for a 150 lb. person, that would be 30- 81 mg tabs, or 2,430 mgs! The supposed human dose is 300 - 650 mg. Clearly there is a real disconnect there between human dosing and chicken dosing. I have no idea regarding equestrian dosing - just wanted you to make sure the dosing is the same BEFORE giving her some!

Okay, I hopped on here because I saw @Ponypoor tagged me, but I have to get back to work on my course now. :( I got to read a few pages, but gosh am I behind. Hopefully the 'issues' with the new LMS will let up and I can catch up this weekend.

Hope everyone is well. My momma hen is doing great with her 5 babies (now, if I could only get her to tone down her scratching and get her to stop flinging her feed dish while doing so, all would be well with the chicken world here!

(P.S. I have a BR girl who thinks she wants to hatch...she has picked a good nest box, but it is empty! She has sat on nothing for 3 days now. I'll give her a few eggs tomorrow if I get a chance - else it will be this weekend. I do hate having her broody for almost a full week before getting eggs, though. It is hard enough on them as it is, without making the 'to hatch' time even longer.)

The Littles have discovered the next room of the Chicken Palace. They are enjoying the blue steps and the tree stumps in the first covered run.
I think they are aware of the power of five as they seem quite fearless and the big Princesses all decided to go elsewhere and have a spa day so they can ignore the littles.
I need a collective name for the littles. Maybe they are the Pentagram!
Eli seems to be dithering about being broody. She ignored Babs’ egg in favor of a dust bath. But she is still Tut-tut-tutting around. I think she needs therapy.

How about 'The Pentagonists'?:lau

pentagon + antagonists, tee hee hee.

Well crap, now what do I do? I could not put Madea down after what I figured to be a broken leg. Instead I managed to find a way to give him almost 2 weeks of semi cage rest. After a week he only had a slight limp and now hardly any limp at all. That still leaves me with the problem of 4 roosters, I do NOT NEED 4 roosters. He is currently doing something that until today only Branch does. Goose is on the porch in the nest box ready to lay her first egg back. I had a heart attack when I could NOT find her 4 chicks. I saw Madea sleeping under a overgrown weed on the creek bank. Thought nothing of it and continued searching. Well I found them finally. Madea is babysitting them :th. I was thinking of giving him to someone who wants to process him, well, obviously now that cannot happen. He is supposed to be in his idiot phase and make this decision and choice easy on me, but nope he spared himself today.
Guarding the weed.

Awwwwwww
Such a good boy ❤️

There is nothing wrong with being a assertive hen. Raven and Corona will tell you that much.
Did someone say assertive?

I bet you all thought this would be Aurora! 😆

How many of you remember that when she first arrived the first thing Phyllis did was to take on Aurora, TWICE!

She also fought Sydney and Sansa. She lost every fight but she was assertive!

So sad.
Hopefully they will be happy together.
Do you know how to make your coop predator proof?
