Hmmm, looks like you have an engineer in the making - she seems quite intrigued by how her pen is put together...better not forget and leave a screwdriver behind in the Palace - she just might take the brooder pen apart in her investigations!

And we ALL know how the reassemble goes when inexperienced ones put things back together! :

Look, I did it - see, all back like it should be!

What are these part here?

Oh, those, those were just extras.

But, weren't they IN it before you took it apart?

Oh, yeah, but we don't need them, not really. They are just extra.

(all of a sudden, a strange creaking is heard....

Then a huge cloud of dust explodes amid a loud crashing sound.

Hmmm, 'extra', huh?

She just shrugs and nonchalantly flits away (screw-driver carefully hidden under her wing so mum doesn't take it away)...thinking "I'm going to have to try that again, gotta figure out where I went wrong........."
Some of our chooks don't care when something falls. The others try to run but wait for me to get out of the way. As soon as I move, even thirty seconds later, they run out very fast. Quite funny to watch.

A water leak to top off my bad week

I don't know if @rural mouse already responded to this - I'm almost 100 pages behind, and surely won't be able to fully catch up this weekend - so I'm risking it.

I suspect that Penelope is a mix of a silkie and an Ameraucauna (in reality, probably an EE as true Ameraucaunas are somewhat expensive and don't come from the big hatcheries - rather from smaller hatcheries and from breeders. (I have bought a few supposed Ameraucaunas' from a hatchery, but in reality they were EEs some laid blue eggs, but some laid a soft green egg. They spelled it 'Americauna')

I suspect this mix because she has the silkie tuft (head) and the toes, and often (from what I have read on here from the likes of @RebeccaBoyd - not through any personal investigations nor scientific research on genetics or anything!) She would be the 'satin feathered' - i.e. more regular feathering like Twig.

Now I'm a bit curious, and will have to do some research on this - when my class is over and things die down a bit for me!
I also suspected this, but she is a large bird so I was leery to think of such a thing. Her daughter Dorothy doesn’t have the poofy head but does have the cheek muffs. I am trying to remember if a beard or not… I think yes. And dark skin, both of them.

If I keep a silkie Roo maybe I will cross her on that and see what I get.

Rat 🐀 wars update:

Failed first mission: There is NO and I mean NO dry ice to be found within a reasonable driving distance to me. I called every grocery store, Walmart, tractor supply, rural king, gas stations, and even the fire department as it is used in fire fighting sometimes, none to be had. I was so disappointed. The only way I can get it is to drive 2 hrs away to get it. Deep sigh 😔

Down but not defeated: We pulled up the picnic table top we had buried under the coop floor to help keep larger predators from burrowing into the coop. Under that we found a nest and destroyed it, killed all the babies we could find. We then flooded the tunnels.

Fall back until reinforcements arrive: I have ordered an electrocution type trap and will bait it. I suspect I will have to resort to poison in tamper proof bait boxes as they are so numerous and today we saw several generations worth of them.

I will end with one word: ICK
Did you try party city

Well the Tweens seem to still be on the nest box. Have my alarm set for 5 am, so I can get them out before the mad rush of the others.View attachment 3519636
If you let them be, I suspect they would stay put until the mad rush is dwindled...provided you didn't put them in the favored box. When they join the mad rush, you know they're accepted.

Talking of mad rush - the video cam just caught this - Sylvie mid air trying to catch up.
