It happens, I know it happens especially with chicks from farm stores where they have been shipped. I just lost the silver laced wyandotte. Next to the speckled sussex I was looking forward to 2 silver based chickens running around. Now in 24 hours I have lost them both. This one was fine out with Raven in the coop eating and drinking. I go to bring them back on the porch and it is gone. In the begining I was worried about the super tiny silkie cross, it is thriving. At this point I am just praying the rest make it to a week old so I can relax.
That’s tough, especially when she seemed fine before, eating and drinking. Poor thing! :hugs :hugs
Does the store have any guarantee like living for a couple of days - maybe they can replace them?

I HAVE to go to town and sadly I’m leaving Hen-Rietta inside the house while I’m gone. She’s too weak to defend herself outside. I’m leaving scrambled eggs and water for her (with antibiotics) I hope she’ll be okay for the few hours. She stayed under the porch all day yesterday, but the house is more comfortable than that.

I had 48 hours from the time of purchase. I could have gotten a refund on the first one but not the 2nd one. I chalked it up as a loss. I would not have taken a replacement chick, Raven would not have taken it this late anyway. Chicks are fragile and even if I hatch them out myself I do loose some in the first week sometimes. It hurts every time but it is a part of life and chicken keeping. I will get pictures of everyone again tonight, I have a favorite already but I am afraid to say which one it is. I will say she has a spicy attitude and even with a mother hen she wants to be held.

Its Friday! Let's see those Fluffy Butts!

Oh so much cuteness! They really do look tuckered out at the end.

I think they're wearing out the adults too. Before the babes arrived, coop close time was between 830 and 9pm (depending upon when last would go in). Now, they're all in between 7 and 730. They're all hanging out around the coop, too, rather than up by the house, over by the pea shrubs, or visiting the horses down below. They're still heading into the carport, but mostly as a 2ndary shelter during the daily (almost) rains. Reminds me. I need to go check for eggs in there now.

Edit: look who I found
