How do you trim chicken toenails? Mine are way longer than those... they don't bother them but it feels like a good idea to trim them.
So, it is pretty easy to trim chicken toenails, and yes, they look too long.![]()
Oh. And about Josey here. Does she need her toenails trimmed? They look long to me.
I won't be able to trim them this week.
You can do one of two things:
using human toe nail clippers, or dog/cat nail clippers, snip off the very end/tip. Be VERY careful to not snip into the quick - it hurts and they will bleed. This takes care and a 'calm' bird to do it this way. If they aren't real calm, wrapping them in a towel helps.
The easier - slightly slower, but still quite effective and safer way is to use a human emery board. I prefer a human metal file/emery board because I can sanitize it AND it lasts a long time. The thin cardboard ones don't last long, but still work.
Again, have the bird calm. Slowly use the file against each nail to file it back. Don't go hog wild and file it back too much - make sure there is still a bit of nail tip beyond the quick so it isn't painful. If the nails are really long, you may need to file them each week for a few weeks ( the quick recedes when you file them regularly, so eventually you can get them to a good length even if they are really long.)
