OK well I have to get cracking here, this is a long weekend (Canada Day July 1st, long weekend). Today I need shavings so I am off to the mill to grab some.

Monday morning I need to put up hay, I have 300 bales waiting for me that need to be moved here, my youngest niece is going to come over and help out. I imagine the 2 of us should be able to get them in. As long as it doesn't rain that is!

Sorrythat I wasnt here the last day or two-
Yesterday I needed to run my dog to the ER because he couldn't lay down and had immense uncomfort in his stomach area. He ended up having Food Bloat because he ate 8 meals, and because he eats to fast. I have no idea how he got eight meals...
I was up until 4AM with him at the ER, and I was hardly tired while we were there.

Then while I was asleep this morning, I guess an egg in my incubator exploded, and so my mom needed to throw the rest of the eggs out. I'm really bummed out.

I'm going to try to catch up here, just may take a little.

I gave up on catching up... It's been a busy, uh, 8 weeks? 6 weeks?

My pullets-- they're ALL pullets!, I'm so glad I picked up a rooster for free-- have stopped chirping and now cluck. I'm so sad... they grew up so fast. They were just little puffs of fluff back in spring. I'd been planning on processing the extra roos, but... I don't have any. So... I guess I'll just have wayyyy too many eggs.

I did some demolition in my laundry room, which leaves me with a couple narrow cabinets that I'm going to repurpose into nesting boxes.

The rooster continues to be a good fella. But... he's very small. The barred rocks and easter eggers are both larger than him, and I think they're 15 weeks.

He's such a well behaved fella, I'm really not complaining. It's just kind of funny to compare him to Richard the Rooster at uni, who's a huge RIR. Still skittish of me, but it's no longer defcon5 when I approach the run.

I got a "real" salary job at my university, and I've been having a ton of fun with that! But so busy. That's what I've been caught up with lately.

Fluffy Butt Friday!

Its rather toasty and humid here, the chickens were panting but active so we gave them some ice water and frozen green beans in the shade.

The littles didn't seem much inclined to leave the cool cover of the run, so while the bigs weren’t there to hassle them, I sat with them. Myth was super curious about me and I snapped this picture of her checking me out. I think she will be a lap chicken someday.

Really hot in the coop. 102...but I re-wet the towel and watered down the building and got it to just over 100. No one seems very distressed. Especially Zen-Mama Eenie, who remains, calmly and firmly in place. The nest box remains 5 or more degrees cooler than the coop.

I was surprised to find two of her eggs in the nest next door this morning! I don't know if she knocked them out on purpose but I put them back under her. Two more days til I candle!

@Pastel The Rooster is probably off for a bit because she's upset. Honey, if you see this, I hope things get better. I know parents seem awfully unfair at times, and sometimes they even are unfair, but one thing I can guarantee is they do what they do for a reason and that reason is NOT because they want you unhappy. Cherish the birds you have. Let us know how they, and you, are doing.
.
Thanks everyone for the clamp ideas. I'll have some that are small but mighty that might do the trick.

Do you fine folks mind one more question? It's still pretty warm, 94 last I checked. The 3 in the coop are fine. My husband suggested we just leave Sheba in the house and take her out to the coop tomorrow night. I'm afraid she'll need to come back tomorrow, and I'll be alone until 10 pm.

Would there be an issue you can think of, confining her two days and a night?
Can you bring in 1 'friend'? I know you only have 4 chickens, so not sure that either Meanie nor Manny would be a good choice...so I really don't know. If you had a number of chickens, it would probably be relatively easy to find a 'friend' for her - but not really sure with your situation. If they are 'away' too long, then they have to 'reintegrate'. Each flock can vary a bit - but with her recent heat stress and general slightly off-ness, I wouldn't want her to have that added stress. This is probably too late, as I would have just suggested she go out at night, then come back in in the morning when you went out to feed and check on them.:fl:fl:fl:fl
