My kiddos did the same thing the first night I moved them to the Summer House. Next night they just went into the Summer House.

Right now they are waiting for me to go out and let them in their roost - they are sitting on the stall door roosting till then

But could they actually see into their old home? I think this is where I went wrong.
I think maybe letting them in and then moving them at night would have been a better idea.

Now they are trying the rafters but not making it and falling down and they are beginning to panic.
I am worried about injury.
I think I am going to go open their door and think of plan B.

I am not sure I have the nerves for this. There is a lot of flying back and forth. Babs has rather sensibly left the roosting area and has gonout to the run and is having a snack to supplement the snack she had after her post-supper snack.

I'd take rent like that over a dog, quite frankly.

It's gonna be hot next week, so I was working on getting a mister set up. I feel pretty guilty, I was supposed to already have this all set up. But, life gets in the way. I wanted some of those fancy atomizers so the chickens wouldn't be bothered by water droplets and actually cool off. But they haven't come in yet! So I bought some cheapo misters from walmart, and they're pretty awful, but do the job. I figure I can repurpose them somewhere else, like my porch, when I get the nicer atomizers. The chickens still stand under them, but they don't seem... certain about it. It's definitely cooler in the run, though.


She insisted on watching me every second of the installation, making sure I did it right. Look, little miss floppy comb, I'm a professional, ok? I don't need this micromanagement.

I've also gone and ordered quail hatching eggs, shipping on the 15th. I'm working on their aviary. I've never hatched out eggs, so this will be a fun adventure.

For Caturday:

My grandma's kittens, Giorgi and Gordi. Yes, two identical kittens! I went for a visit and worn them out, then took pics of them sleeping.

What an amazing weirdo. He's still this photogenic to this day.

I am not familiar with olive eggers personally. Little experience with pea combs which is why Owly worries me. What I am experienced with is Black Copper Marans and Marans crosses. Since I got the Marans lets safely say I have hatched off about 200 chicks, probably more. At least half of those have been crosses. While I have hatched off some solid black pullets I have never, never hatched off a solid black cockerel or rooster. Every single one that has been black based has gotten the Maran's markings if they are boys. This even held true with Twig who had a solid black silkie father and a Marans mother. If Tassels was or is a boy, those copper markings should already be showing around the neck AND shoulder area. Again, this is strictly coming from my personal experience.

I just processed the black based.... I read something recently about silkies and sex-link chicks....I think it's said: skin color on the Z chromosome

Silkie crosses: non- silkie roo ZZ cross with silkie hen ZW so all pullets from cross would get W from hen and not have black skin. All cockerels would get Z from each parent so would be black (or mostly black skin) making for sex-link babies

Silkie roo ZZ cross with non-silkie hen ZW: all babies get Z from roo, so (as long as roo is pure silkie and double copy black skin Z) all babies would get black skin. If the roo is single copy black skin (silkie mix that looks like full silkie) then the chicks could get either one.


If I processed that correctly, you should be able to tell at hatch the Chiquita offspring if Bubba is the father. If Branch is the father (regardless of which hen's egg), spin the roulette wheel.

Do they go in during the day? If so, close it in the morning so they have all day to adjust.

They never go in it during the day.
They are out and about in the Chicken Palace, in the yard. Then they file in there at night. I was worried because it is more enclosed space than the rest of the Palace - it is inside the Palace but has a roof inside so other chickens wouldn't roost on top of the brooder.
So I was worried about it getting hot and not great ventilation. It is fine for one adult as a sick bay, or a bunch of littles, but it is getting really cramped with these 5 big ones.
I should have just left them to figure it out for themselves. I think I really stressed them (and me!).

Well for the time being I am leaning towards pullet for Owly. I just witnessed her doing something that really I have not saw a chick this young regardless of gender do. Raven brought them to bed and once again everyone was squezing into the box with her. Owly must have gotten too cramped so she hopped into the empty box beside them and sat in the middle of it. She then started playing with the bits of hay. What started out as playing ended up with her tossing hay over both sides of her back like the hens do when they are nest building. That HAS to be pullet behavior.
