Laying Down on the Job

Hattie is the first hen I have had that lays down and eats. This started in the past winter. I thought once things warmed up she would go back to normal but nope. She is still laying down to eat.

This is another reason it is probably good that Aurora is in charge.
I could see my Jubilee’s doing this when they get older 100%, they are quick to lay down if nothing is happening. They do go play and forage for a while but all of them go back somewhere shady to sit and contemplate the world. Laid back chickens even as babies!

Got almost to the rig this morning but all the rain in Eastern Oklahoma had swelled up this creek a little too much.View attachment 3571660
Wow that’s a lot of water. Well I guess on the one hand just as well you couldn’t get to the rig, wouldn’t want to get stuck and couldn’t get back!

Be safe down there.

I just read something from a mold expert who said distilled vinegar is more effective than bleach. I never tried that before but will give it a go in future.
Yes I have used that here in the barn on mold on wood surfaces.

Need to be careful to not use vinegar on cement or plaster (anything with calcium) as it could dissolve/cause pitting.

I have certainly had more fun chicken chores.
It isn’t really that hot - about 80F - but it is 100% humidity with lots of angry thunder. The air feels like you could cut it with a knife.
I have ‘boarded up’ the brooder house with packing paper and painter’s tape so they can’t see in. It took me a while to realize it was easier to tape on the outside!
I also taped some paper over the windows in the corner where they seemed afraid to roost. Maybe it will make them feel more secure to use that space. We will see.
I gave up on making a cardboard ceiling. I realized they would try and roost on it and by this point I was completely clammy and all my clothes were sticking to me so I needed a break.
This lot gathered at the bottom of the step - kind of a dangerous place for a cuddle puddle!

Good job! You’re getting the hot sticky stuff we had yesterday and Friday.
