Good thinking and yes, they will do that. I wouldn't say this is its main branch it is one of many huge branches. I will try to get a picture if I can do so without being underneath it.
I am fortunate enough to live with many huge mature trees (though fewer than before Hurricane Sandy) and so I have the tree service inspect regularly. This guy pops by and looks around every few months and he also brings free woodchips. So I am as confident as I can be that the tree is healthy - the truth is that trees do sometimes shed big branches. Sometimes I hear them fall in the woods which is a very primeval sort of sound. There is always a short silence immediately after and then the birds start up again.

We have huge white pines and their branches are prone to breaking under heavy snow, the sound is amazing!

Well she is a very pretty young lady and I am glad she is enjoying a bit of a breeze.

I can’t wait to see what colour egg she lays. Then I will have an idea who mama is.

Well maybe I am not good at estimating circumference from that distance. I will have the facts tomorrow when the tree guy comes.
The fact is, even if I am 100% wrong and it is only 3' in circumference it is still a big dangerous branch.
I won't go check now for obvious safety reasons but from memory the trunk at about 5' up (so past the point it splays out for the roots) is about 12' in circumference. But maybe I am exaggerating everything in my mind because it is scary.

Ok I am sooooo glad you are getting this taken care of - trees are lovely but they can also be dangerous.

Yes. Not the whole Palace but the furthest out covered run. It is solidly built so it may withstand a direct hit. And of course the full weight may miss the Chicken Palace and I hope it can sustain the smaller outermost part of the branch.
And of course what I really hope is that the tree climbing guy can make it safe before it comes down on its own.

These 5 are about 2 weeks old. This last one is getting some very pretty bronze in his/her feathers. (Photos 3&4 are of the same chick The last photo is the front one of the two photos with the 2 black headed chicks. They are so stinking cute - too bad my DC are never willing to let them near the enemy - it is always a fight with me being the loser (multiple hard pecks!) But I do have to carry them out to their 'outside pen', so on days I'm home, it is a bruised hand day!

So cute - love that they are getting their feathers in.

Tell her to eat the mosquitoes, not the poor dragonfly.

They eat those too, and moths, my nieces hen RH ate a tiny froglet the other day! I saw the leg sticking out the side of her beak

Revised estimates of the sizes of the tree
I went for a walk and took some pictures of the tree. Not really a very good subject matter for practicing the trick of making landscape pictures. This is very reassuring it is no more than a sapling!

The tree. The Chicken Palace is to the left and my little blue and white sun shade is almost completely obscured by the bowed down branches. I don’t think it is a 100’ tree. I have some of those. This is more like a 70’ tree.

And finally the branch. It is not a 6’ circumference branch. It is resting on one easily that size but it is more like 2’.
I still hope it doesn’t come crashing down on the Chicken Palace roof in the middle of the night!
