Hi everyone. I hope everyone is doing well. I’m popping in to let you know about a new method I’m going to try to help keep the chickens cool in hot summer. I already run films and misters, but we have a vacation planned at the end of September and I’m concerned that we might have a major heatwave when are we gone, and I won’t be able to look after their them. I’m going to put in a little drip irrigation system, where drips will go into some water pans so they have fresh water every day and then there’s also a skinny little soaker hose you can put on the drip system to help cool and wet the earth for them. I’ll let you know how it goes. I did a practice run yesterday, but it was leaking. I learned that I need a pressure regulator, which is coming today. I also plan to filter the water to help keep things from clogging up. We are very hard water here. If all goes well, I’ll put the whole thing on a timer. If that works well, I may put the Mr. on a timer as well. And maybe get a solar fan.
If it works well, I think you should write it up in a n article - so everyone will have it as a resource! This is a great idea. ❤️ ❤️

We have about a 3 to 1 ratio of hens to roosters. Red's tribe is 5 to 1 and the Silkie crosses are 1 to 1 for now.
Those are more normal ratios - especially the 3-1 and 1-1 for the 'wild'. The 5-1 (and 3-1, if it works) is a really good ratio for keeping in our current condition, imho. Not quite as much protecting needed (but still some), and not as far ranging to forage. But, still need to protect and escort.

Someone like @rural mouse might need the closer to 3-1 given her keeping conditions, but for me, the 5-1 is a bit better.

Oh my, I was gone 2-3 days and there's no way I'll catch up! I'll read backwards in a bit.

For now, here's a little update on the triplets. Feathers! Wing feathers they're already using to flutter up to Mom's back. I think Uno is going to have white wings and Tres will have reddish ones. That's still about the only thing I can tell.

I wonder what she's saying to them here? 🤔

I saw some ducks in a kid area that I was driving past.
"STOP THE CAR! I NEED TO SWIM WITH THE DUCKS!"
I waded into the lake, I was going to catch a duck, and cuddle it. I miss my chooks. (Friends came by, everyone is good)
I went into the lake, and the ducks took one look at me, and swam away. They knew that I was gonna grab them 🤣🙄😳
