Mr Rico is darn lucky I do not move all that well or can bend down all that well or he would be chicken dinner tonight.

He got ahold of Tuff and had her on her side trying to molester her - poor Tuff! I wacked Rico off her and she just lay there poor old girl. She is in my office now, hiding out with me. Rico's days are numbered though, if he is going to be a beast then I can do with out that crap - I have too many old girls here. At least Penne stays out with the Grups and Mr P, who keeps him in line.

So who gets locked away? Tuff for her safety? or Rico to protect the other old gals from him?

I actually think local limits of 4 is just ridiculous! I really believe you need 3, but 4 is better - for a minimum flock size. So if you are restricted to 4, lose one and the others are elderly - you can only add 1?? You never should add a lone chicken (intentionally ) if possible. But, if you add 2, you are 'over' the limit! Crazy!. I do think the 'purchasing' part should be a min of 3 or 4....but you should be able to have at least 6 chickens. 3 is not a flock, imo (or, bare minimum of a flock, and if all 3 aren't cohesive, it means one is always left out.)

Oh, well. God forbid we make rules that make sense in the big scheme of things. Someone might be upset about the egg song, for pete's sake. Everyone should know where their food comes from. Have to smell a bit of cow poop at times when the wind is 'unfavorable', hear an escort song, or a rooster greeting the day or calling to his ladies, etc. Not that you want it to be excessive...just a mild reminder of all things life and reality.....

Despite all of my celebrity here no one asks my opinion when writing laws about the number of chickens one can have in their backyard. I just can't understand why. I made due for many years with less than 4 but I did bump up to 5 when I was adding. Having only 2 and then needing to wait to add is courting disaster. It has happened to me too often.

My opinion is that two are too few, but eight are great!

We've never tried tube feeding. We do it with a syringe. Put the antibiotic in one syringe, the vitamins in another, and a bigger capacity syringe for the wet feed which is ground in a blender. It will sometimes clog but I believe it to be less stressful on us and the chicken.

A bigger capacity syringe sounds like a great idea for feeding. What kind of diameter is it? Is it readily available in pharmacy?

I have been reading lots of threads about cockerel behaviour and it seems to be pretty common for them to need to be separated for a time for the well being of other flock members, usually the same age pullets, but I can see that older unwell hens would need protection as well.

My hens are my priority, so I would probably create a bachelor flock with the males that were causing problems if I was planning on trying to keep them and wait out their hormone overload. Does it help to think that he probably can't help it and could be bewildered by his crazy hormones too?

I am following your situation with interest since I have an unexpected cockerel and don't have any experience with male chickens.

I put the box fan on and my 4 week old chicks were almost blown away hahahaha
