Yes we do think she is making good progress! Her comb color is still concerning and the vet did not really have anything to say when we brought it up...

Light eats a lot of things and she currently loves cabbage (chopped), zuccini (chopped), sometimes water melons. Yesterday at dinner, we also fed her some very tender pork and she LOVED IT so much. She repeatedly made her excited noise (kinda like tidbit) and scoffed down the pork.

Unfortunately, she would not eat the prescribed soft meal on her own. She finds it disgusting...

I am not a good tube feeder yet. Yesterday morning, the tube came out of the syringe because the content was too thick so we had to do it a second time. For yesterday evening's tube feeding, the mix was coming out of her beak in the very end. I guess I did not send the tube down far enough? She was fine, nothing got into her airway, but I felt like she was traumatized. This morning, I made the same mistake of making too thick of a food paste and the tube came out of the syringe in the middle of it again... Sigh. We did not try again.
We've never tried tube feeding. We do it with a syringe. Put the antibiotic in one syringe, the vitamins in another, and a bigger capacity syringe for the wet feed which is ground in a blender. It will sometimes clog but I believe it to be less stressful on us and the chicken.

The shade cloth is up, or, as I call it, the black sails. It's still very breezy today, with the wind coming from the south and going right in the doors, so the fans are not woth bothering with. I know the shade will help the run. Hopefully the coop. View attachment 3590776
Is currently 96 out and in the coop...also 96. At least it's not hotter inside. Eenie and the triplets aren't panting. There's plenty of cold water, electrolytes, and damp earth for everyone outside. That's about all I can do. Can't wait to have a better coop.

They've actually lowered the temps in the forecast. Hopefully they lower more. View attachment 3590785
Those temperatures are tough to deal with. You did a wonderful job with the shade cloth! Even lowering the temperature a few degrees will help out a lot.

It’s bad for me to be here today (at home) because the people who’s house burned down last week, are burning trash and debris in the yard behind it. The smoke is hurting my eyes and breathing is horrible.
They have been fined for doing that already, but they are still doing it anyway.
Pity me and my animal friends tax: IMG_3176.jpeg IMG_3164.jpeg

I had the opposite experience - I find passing a tube to be relatively easy now I practiced it and once in, the chicken seemed unconcerned about it. With a syringe I was constantly worrying that it wasn't still in the right place.
Let's face it though, we would all rather not have to do either!

Good job! I am heading into high 90s here for the next two days and then in theory it will break and get cooler. It is 'only' 90 right now and the chickens all seem fine in the deep, deep shade of the butterfly bush. Every now and then I hear them mutter to each other.

I think everyone is in this shot. Except of course Pooh who is never where she is supposed to be! I know she is with them as I saw her burrowing her way in.

Oh there she is. But now Piglet has disappeared and you can’t see Babs.
This is what it is like closing up each evening.

I second Bobs vote! Cardhu was Andrew’s moms preferred Scotch. Beats Laphroaig hands down, both for naming and drinking qualities (a touch too peaty IMO)
I was certain no one else would know what I was talking about but I forgot that you were still about. Shad might also know.

What do you think of Cardhu as a scotch and a name for a chicken @Shadrach

Mr Rico is darn lucky I do not move all that well or can bend down all that well or he would be chicken dinner tonight.

He got ahold of Tuff and had her on her side trying to molester her - poor Tuff! I wacked Rico off her and she just lay there poor old girl. She is in my office now, hiding out with me. Rico's days are numbered though, if he is going to be a beast then I can do with out that crap - I have too many old girls here. At least Penne stays out with the Grups and Mr P, who keeps him in line.

So who gets locked away? Tuff for her safety? or Rico to protect the other old gals from him?
