A few ways.
You can listen for breathing - or watch if they are making breathing movements.
You can shine a light in their eye and see if the pupil constricts.
You can brush a feather on the surface of their eye and see if they try to blink.
You can feel the tone in their muscles - e.g. move their legs, lift their eyelid, or open their jaw. Rigor sets in very fast in chickens - if there is any stiffening they are dead.

Finally if you see flapping movements of the wings or jerking movements of the head that typically means the chicken has died. They have reflexes in their spinal cord that will cause those movements in the few minutes after they die.

I am so sad that you feel the need to know this and I hope I am doing the right thing by answering your question.

What is most important at this moment is that you celebrate her life - which was undoubtedly a wonderful one - and remember that she is not suffering now.

I am just so sorry she died.
:hugs
Her head was floppy when I found her.
I will always remember her. I named a computer after her a while back and that's her to stay (same with my BYC and YouTube names and stuff like that).

I just want to know.
It is something that is pestering me and those don't leave my mind.
A birds heartbeat would be extremely difficult to detect as it beats so fast, but you would need a stethoscope to hear it anyways.

I would say it is best she has passed, you wouldn’t want her to linger and suffer, that would be cruel.

Maybe you can redesign the coop so that it’s away from the dryer vent, a piece of wood to redirect the air flow is dangerous, I suggest if you can’t move the run then get more venting to redirect it away from the coop/run. Any heated air, or CO2 emissions, and even the scented heated air are toxic to not only the birds but people. Venting should always be at least 3’ from windows or doors for a reason - so the air dissipates and doesn’t harm people. So it stands to reason keeping it at least that from pets and livestock.

Spend the next few days making up some drawings doing so research on how to make it better, and see if your dad and you can fix it better.

My landline is dead. My modem for internet connection is dead . Patience please. A service technician is scheduled for Monday evening. I can’t find the problem with the phone line.
Drats!

Well as long as your cell phone works for emergencies - tho I was wondering what you were up to!
