I pay $14.00 USD for a 50lb bag of scratch.
I pay $22.00 for 50lb bag. The mixture of milled feed the veterinarian suggested that I should use.
The chooks chose to eat the treats before they eat their feed.

I am slowly using up the layer, then will feed the grower and add the high protein supplement I have - that and the Japanese beetles should be good protein!

Plus all the meat products my mum throw ok to them.

Hmmm speaking of which - I need lunch! It’s already gone 1pm!

Someone likes to dig. He keeps this up and the chooks will have a new bathtub.

Meanwhile the Invasion (about 4 days younger than Sherlock)

Tuff is getting black breast feathers. That makes Horus his papa. Mama likely Pippa (stronger Colombian markings). Let me see if I can break down his mix then. 1/4 brown leghorn, 1/4 gold penciled hamburg, 5/8 buff orpington, 1/8 EE......I think.... :idunno(Or 1/8 BO, 1/4 Colombian wyandotte instead of the 5/8 BO)

If you have grasshoppers. Catch with a jar. Collect a bunch (keep adding to a bigger jar). Dump the hoppers in the coop and enjoy the mayhem. The chooks (all of them) will enjoy the extra protein.
I hate bugs. LOL

Really, it's amazing I manage in the country. Im not afraid of them, i just hate them. (Except centipedes-I'm terrified of those!) My dog LOVES to eat bugs. Flies, spiders, moths, crickets...anything she can catch. I walk thru the yard and bugs, bugs, bugs. I have considered catching them, but not sure how to do that without touching them. 😱

Widemouth pint canning jar and oval shaped kleenex box punch out (or the side of the box or cereal box cut to square 2-3 inches wider than the jar). Make 2 of those and take a large empty pickle jar, wide mouth quart canning jar or something similar sized (or bigger) with a screw on lid. When you catch a grasshopper, set the jar down on the cardboard next to the large jar. Unscrew the lid and slide the 2nd piece of cardboard over the mouth as you slide the lid off. Hold it on while picking up the caught jar with he cardboard lid. Match cardboard and slide it out from between the jars. Once the bug is in the bigger jar, slide the cardboard back and set the catch jar down. Replace the screw on lid (sliding the cardboard out) and go catch another. Don't leave the holding jar in the sun. Will get bugless pics if needed.

We have lots of locusts here this summer. The chooks and pups love them. When a locust falls from the tree the scrum is on and may the quickest predator win!

@Lilion here's the pics no actual bugs, but hope you get the idea.

Jar the bug
20230812_120156.jpg
Slide the cardboard partly under

20230812_120200.jpg
Work the jar over the cardboard as the bug gets on the cardboard.

Bean jar is the holding jar.

Ready to add

20230812_120020.jpg
Let bug in, slide cardboard back into place

20230812_120028.jpg
Set aside catching jar

20230812_120039.jpg
Relid holding jar, sliding cardboard out

20230812_120048.jpg
Screw lid back on (doesn't have to be tight but hoppers will jump so can knock lid off if not at least a half turn)
