The challenge is figuring out which eggs are hers. Most of the breeds here (at the in-laws) lay brown eggs: jersey giant, bielefelder, wyandotte, buff orpington, barred plymouth rock. By next spring the buff brahma will be laying and there's that cochin too. The white eggs came from my birds, the green eggs came from the EEs crossed with the brown eggs. Next spring, we (niece and I) may use the incubator.Would yo be able to get some of her sister's eggs and hatch them? I am hoping her sister has a similar benevolent but matriarchal personality? Maybe that would be passed on through ehr sister and whatever Roo mated with her. Especially since you don't have any of her genetic offspring - maybe keep those good tendencies in the flock genetics????I know no 2 chickens are alike, and it would only be 1/2 her sister genetics...but I am all for continuing the line when there are good traits. And, it seems Silver had good traits in spades.
I know, it may be too early to think about such things - and it might even feel like you are trying to replace her since it is so soon. (You aren't, or at least I'm not suggesting that - more suggesting that good instincts and traits you want to promote/keep)![]()

If FIL wants to phase out the chickens, I may see if I can have one of the incubators and an assortment of eggs from here, but am not going to hatch eggs now. Would be mid September before they hatch and frost could (unlikely based upon current weather patterns) happen any day now.
Come spring, we will see. I do like the idea of getting some of her sister's eggs, but the other questions are:
1. Will she make it through the winter (greater chances of predation)
2. Will she be laying?
If answers to both are yes, then will probably try for some of her babies.
